243898 12821 Interests besides surfing revisited 1 cheyneskeezer Apr 8, 2022 2022-04-08T09:22:35-0400 Awhile back there was a topic about the things we do besides surfing. I’ve always had at least one other hobby for when the surf is down. Still surf the days I’m off. About 3 years ago after not fishing really other than deep sea as a teenager with my dad I jumped into fly fishing. I had no idea about anything down to casting, approaching the water, where fish feed and so on. Took me a solid year to even catch a trout then it finally clicked. It has been prob the most rewarding things I’ve taught myself. Just got back from a trip up north ( found spot burning is worse in fly fishing than surfing) and got into some really nice fish. Eastern sierras are my new heaven. And believe it or not the local streams around LA if you hike still have wild native trout that aren’t stocked. Anyways if you have thought about trying it it isn’t as daunting or as snobby as one would think I’ve met some really great people already thru it just like surfing “ The tug is the drug “

Thanks for sharing those beautiful photos! I usually surf cast on the Outer Banks of N.C. and always felt that fishing and surfing went hand in hand. Most of my beach vehicles have had both surf racks on the roof and rod racks on the front bumper. Not many of mine look as nice as your catch. The colors rival tropical fish! This weekend I'll be building an old school Roots supercharged 427 cubic inch big block Chevy, for a 1927 Ford hot rod of mine. Incremental progress. Also getting a 1973 Corvette that's been in my crowd since 1985 ready for our towns Easter Parade.

243929 12821 Interests besides surfing revisited 7 Chilly Willy Apr 8, 2022 2022-04-08T15:05:25-0400 That's awesome! I've never been fly fishing but it looks pretty appealing. I've probably got too many hobbies besides surfing. They tend to compete at times, but thankfully go in phases. Skateboarding is my new big revival -- always transition (mostly bowls), never really street. My wife and I share a love for down river kayaking, especially on the various streams we have running through the NJ Pine Barrens. It's always amazing that there is free fun to be had simply by showing up with your gear and paddling out into nature (much like surfing in that sense). It also amazes me that we trust our skills enough to shove off down a river and know that we'll make it to the other end. I recently retired from the local band scene after 20 years of gigging, but I still enjoy playing, writing, and recording music. Honorable mentions: sailing, hiking, refurbishing old arcade games, making stuff (surfboards, skateboards), and recently some painting. Surfing is still my main squeeze though.

243956 12821 Interests besides surfing revisited 19 fluidworks Apr 9, 2022 2022-04-08T20:08:03-0400 The most "interesting" thing I've undertaken lately is being a dad for the first time last year. Trying to navigate raising a thoughtful, kind, strong, compassionate, independent child in this world is a lot harder than I would have thought. Aside from that, prior to breaking my foot, and my usual love of surfing and mountain biking, the latest thing I've been into is archery and bowhunting specifically. I grew up in a family without hunting, guns, etc. There are a lot of similarities between archery in surfing, between the appreciation for nature and even difficulty. Similar to sitting out on a beautiful morning waiting for sets, just being quiet outside with a rising sun waiting for animals is incredibly meditative and satisfying. In terms of technique Anyone can flail around with a bow or surfboard and not be successful, but shooting smoothly and consistently is incredibly challenging. I'm really looking forward to getting my son out with me when he's older. This thread reminded me how I've been wanting to try fly fishing. Reading Yvon Chouinard's writing has got me interested in a tenkara rod to try it as the most minimalist form.

I used to spend a lot of time climbing but it has been a few years now. Combination of a major injury/surgery, COVID, and having a kid kind of messed that up but I just got my climbing shoes out of the closet this week to get back at it. I also like to play guitar. Usually just jam at home with a looper or with some friends. Something I have always wanted to learn and I decided to go for it about 5 years ago. Very glad I did, it’s a great way to destress and I love being able to learn and play songs I have been listening to my whole life. I like seeing other peoples pics so here’s a few of mine:

I've been weaning myself off of shaping and especially glassing for health reasons. While that has been a bummer, it also left me with the time and energy to get back into some things that I'd left aside for years: restoring a vintage ukulele or two, painting, some woodwork and wood art, and way more walk/hikes and riding my bike. It's so easy for me to get mono-focused on surfing that I was missing out on some other great activities.

The idea was to NOT do a surf trip just for me. Had a guide for two days at the end of May on the lower Madison river & on Harrison Lake. We got short instruction and outfitted for the float trip on a boat. Our guide was incredible and put us on the fish!! Bucket List dream trip for us both. Oh and 4 days in Yellowstone were the best. Since then back home we have taken up fresh water lake fishing. She’s totally addicted. I’ll post some pics later……

243997 12821 Interests besides surfing revisited 29 Sax-son Apr 9, 2022 2022-04-09T11:44:20-0400 There was a time in my life when surfing was everything to me. I put all my energies into it like most of us do when we are very young. However, once I started college, I started to become exposed to many different experiences. Surfing was still something I was still interested in, but not at the obsessive level anymore. When I started into the work force, my time was whatever I could devote to it which was never really enough. This lasted until my mid-forties when I came down with a respiratory infection that I believe I picked up on a trip to Puerto Escondido back in the early 1990's. It took me out of surfing for at least 6 to 8 months before it cleared up to where I could paddle out again. I couldn't ever catch my breath. To get to the point, I have always been a part time musician and I started to build guitars for other musicians. As a result, I poured all my energies into that. It was reasonably successful for a while, but eventually I moved away from my customer base and have since just done a few per year. Attached is a photo of what I had put together. Most of these have since been sold. Image processing. Refresh page to view

Distances from 5 km to marathons i do often but 2 weeks ago i did my first Ultrarun. It was 60 km around a dutch island called Texel. As a running surfers ofcourse my eyes were focused on the waves and i spotted a few nice banks to go back to for a surf session. BTW running and surfing isn’t the best sportcombo you can choose. Although it’s good for your condition and health you’re not getting more flexible after running long distances so some stretching and maybe Yoga would be good (but i am too lazy for that)!!

There is something about serenity of the Eastern Sierra that make that place magical. Less built up and rural make it a great getaway.

I used to golf a lot when I was a kid. My dad taught me how as he was an avid golfer and wanted someone to play against. He and I would team up against other players and it was fun for a while. Although I was pretty good for my age, I eventually lost interest and got more into team sports. I tried to take it up again in my 20's, but I had lost all my skills and sucked horribly at it. I just threw in the towel and said better off not worrying about it.

That said the past year has been a blur for me with some unexpected life changes and I'm trying to make time to re-explore some of the old hobbies that I've had a passion for. Like surfing; skiing, sailing, and climbing have been the three things that I've loved and have given me perspective on who I am and how little I am in this world. Getting out on the water and into the mountains and realizing that despite our egos, and self absorbed nature we are just a tiny speck. lt let's me live life in the moment and not have to have everything planned out. I’m still trying to figure out where to play in the greater Boston area. There was a decent track in this town I moved to but it was shut down to build houses a few years back. There is at least a small surf golf connection even if it’s just something some surfers get into because you can do it when the winds comes onshore. I played with Chris Christensen once as we have a mutual friend who was in town but that round ended early when our mutual friend’s dog escaped from Chris’s yard and they had to go find her. Since moving to MA I’ve taken up stereo/speaker repair as a replacement for my old surfboard repair hobby. Boston was a center of speaker manufacturing and design in the 60s and there is lots of old gear cheaply available that is easy to work on. I have a record collection dating back to my college days in the 90s so it’s been a blast fixing up old equipment and getting better sound than I’ve ever had before.

I've always had at least one other hobby for when the surf is down. Still surf the days I'm off. About 3 years ago after not fishing really other than deep sea as a teenager with my dad I jumped into fly fishing. I had no idea about anything down to casting, approaching the water, where fish feed and so on. Took me a solid year to even catch a trout then it finally clicked. It has been prob the most rewarding things I've taught myself. Just got back from a trip up north ( found spot burning is worse in fly fishing than surfing) and got into some really nice fish. Eastern sierras are my new heaven. And believe it or not the local streams around LA if you hike still have wild native trout that aren't stocked. Anyways if you have thought about trying it it isn't as daunting or as snobby as one would think I've met some really great people already thru it just like surfing " The tug is the drug " Click to expand... Beautiful trout, sir! I have a bunch of hobbies besides surfing (guitar hoarding/playing, motorcycles) but fly fishing is #1. You're in Long Beach? Don't overlook what you can catch in the salt. I can get to Eastern Sierras in under 5 hours, but I can also get my skiff out of the garage, fish the Wall (or stomp around in the sand hunting halibut and perch) and tuck the boat back in by lunch.

I highly recommend at least 3 or 4 lessons to learn the fundamentals...find a local pro who's got good reviews whether at the range or a public course...once you can strike the ball and get it going...go play! Playing is the best practice imo...starting to play with a do it yourself homemade swing is not good imo...once you start those bad habits...you won't ever really be able to correct them...and yes the short game is crucial to scoring...I'd say more important than distance off the tee with your driver

Many people (former baseball players mainly) find it pretty easy to hit a ball well, it's the getting it to go straight that takes some practice/ replacing old baseball swing muscle memory with 'golf swing'. Figuring out your swing/how far you hit can be done at the range without any lessons, especially with what information/tips are available online . Playing mainly at executive/par 3 courses until you are comfortable with your irons before advancing to needing to hit the driver every hole will definitely help. And buy cheap (used) balls, they wont last more than a few holes for the first year or two. If you want faster results 1 v 1 lessons at the range with someone who takes the swing you have and works to improve it, but it can be pricey. While scores are definitely made with the short game, if you cant hit it well and straight (ish) off the tee you will be in for a helluva day. Worst case track down the cart girl for a round and always remember a day on the course is better than a day in the office

Never had Golfed before but I had good core and upper body strength. They showed me how to hold a club and I laid into that ball with every fiber, and the first and only time, it took off like a shot toward the first hole. My friends were sure I was joking with them about not having golfed before, since they said that all Doctors Golf. I assured then that there were no lessons given between Freshman Tooth Drilling and Extractions. That was the last ball that traveled where it was supposed to. Eventually they gave me orange balls to help locate my errant strokes. Every subsequent swing would send the ball arcing to the right, and at one point, over the trees and onto a nearby road accompanied by the sound of screeching brakes. A short time later a fellow drove up in a Golf cart with an upset woman as his passenger asking if any of us were playing with orange balls, since one was stuck in a hole in her windshield. I figured that I had enough hobbies to enjoy the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat without adding this one.

People get so cranky when they get pelted with golf balls. I had a similar experience playing golf very poorly at a challenging course in Arizona. I lost approximately 6000 balls that day to the Arizona desert but there was one particular drive that went hurtling towards the houses lining the fairway. A pretty large fellow ran out hollering about how I put a hole in his house and said he'd meet me at the clubhouse. Boy was he mad. He thankfully never showed up but did you really expect something different when you bought a house 150 yards down the fairway? Bad golf isn't all bad though: I did once get a hole in one -- on the wrong hole! I teed off on hole 5 and had a terrible drive that went straight up in the air toward the neighboring green of hole 6. There were some younger kids putting on that green, so I yelled fore and cringed in embarrassment. The kids started freaking out and asking if it was my ball. I admitted that it was mine, cringing and thinking they were going to be mad. To my surprise, they were totally stoked -- they said it took a bounce and rolled right into their hole.

Making surfboards leads to the sub-hobbies of constant internet researching and tool acquisition. Some mentioned snowboarding in the winter, which is definitely on my list too. Ford Windsor engine I built for an OBX friend's Factory 5 1965 A.C. Cobra. A 1998 Pontiac LT1 Convertible that was decaying at the roadside that I resurrected a couple of years ago. Click to expand... I used to own a 73 Corvette that looked exactly like that one. It had different wheels but was red and sported a 350 CI L82 engine. I eventually sold it to a guy who came over to my house to buy a surfboard from me. He had been a lineman who had an work related accident and lost part of one leg as a result. He still surfed with a prosthetic leg. He fell in love with the Corvette and had to have it. I think he ended up with a ton of cash from that accident.

This one belonged to a surf buddy and high school friend who introduced me to the Outer Banks. He bought the car when I was was a recent graduate from NYU Dental School and really didn't have a pot to p in. In fact, one night he spotted me $20 so we could hang out at some local bar and I found a $100 in the parking lot. Gave him back his $20 and we split the $100! I had 2 Pintos a 1972 with the German 2.0 Liter engine that I'd Installed a Crane P-284-B camshaft, Empi stainless VW intake valves in place of the factory exhaust valves, a shop called Island Porting Service's Pete Kenny ported and polished the head, Venolia forged flat top pistons and a Car Corporation turbo kit that used a Corvair 3 bolt intake turbo. I found a fellow with a hybrid Corvair turbo with the standard exhaust turbine and housing but mated to a larger impeller an compressor housing. It would make 20 lbs. of boost with water and Methanol injection, and about 23 would blow the head gasket. The rest of the car was similarly modified but looked stock. Easily beat Paul's Corvette, so in 1985 with about 35,000 miles on it we removed the engine from the Corvette and had a local machine shop bore it .030 over, rebalance it for TRW L-2256-F forged flat top pistons, installed plasma ceramic rings, and we finished it off with a Crane Blazer 288-H camshaft, appropriate companion parts and headers. Finally it was topped off with a NOS Nitrous Oxide System. His first time out with the system armed resulted in a flat spin and the N2O system was never activated again. I bought it from Paul 15 years later and it still had a full tank of N2O. I've re done the car since, changing all the parts that you've noticed but saving all the original parts.
