Trying to navigate raising a thoughtful, kind, strong, compassionate, independent child in this world is a lot harder than I would have thought. Aside from that, prior to breaking my foot, and my usual love of surfing and mountain biking, the latest thing I've been into is archery and bowhunting specifically. I grew up in a family without hunting, guns, etc. There are a lot of similarities between archery in surfing, between the appreciation for nature and even difficulty. Similar to sitting out on a beautiful morning waiting for sets, just being quiet outside with a rising sun waiting for animals is incredibly meditative and satisfying. In terms of technique Anyone can flail around with a bow or surfboard and not be successful, but shooting smoothly and consistently is incredibly challenging. I'm really looking forward to getting my son out with me when he's older. This thread reminded me how I've been wanting to try fly fishing. Reading Yvon Chouinard's writing has got me interested in a tenkara rod to try it as the most minimalist form. |
