I've always had at least one other hobby for when the surf is down. Still surf the days I'm off. About 3 years ago after not fishing really other than deep sea as a teenager with my dad I jumped into fly fishing. I had no idea about anything down to casting, approaching the water, where fish feed and so on. Took me a solid year to even catch a trout then it finally clicked. It has been prob the most rewarding things I've taught myself. Just got back from a trip up north ( found spot burning is worse in fly fishing than surfing) and got into some really nice fish. Eastern sierras are my new heaven. And believe it or not the local streams around LA if you hike still have wild native trout that aren't stocked. Anyways if you have thought about trying it it isn't as daunting or as snobby as one would think I've met some really great people already thru it just like surfing " The tug is the drug " Click to expand... And another aspect of flyfishing that is so much like surfing is you can build your own equipment if you choose from graphite rods to bamboo to tying flies Like surfing it's an ancient pastime |
