183532 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 1 MarkA Sep 4, 2020 2020-09-04T12:29:15-0400 Not wanting to start drama, but wanted to get some of your experiences dealing with Pavel. I’ve been thinking of getting one of his boards, as San Diego legend that makes amazing boards, but I’ve heard some rumors that don’t seem cool. For me the boards and shapers who make the boards I own are very personal and a refection of my style. I’m a brand/shaper loyalist and the type of board you ride or carry under your arm represents you. Their names are displayed on the board and I wouldn’t want to be representing someone or something that’s not cool to people or the spirit of surfing.
183536 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 2 SMUKES Sep 4, 2020 2020-09-04T12:43:41-0400 Makes magical surfboards somehow which is weird cuz he doesn't surf per se. Lots and lots of the best fish surfers in the world straight up say his fish are unsurpassed. However... Lol, I'd get a mitsven or something else. To be honest the odds of you being able to get an actual real one are close to zero.

183557 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 5 SMUKES Sep 4, 2020 2020-09-04T14:19:29-0400 I went to him for one in the early 90's. He was hilarious. We talked for 2 hours and became friends. At the end of our conversation he said: "Yeah... Mike... If I were you I'd just get one from Josh, his are great too and he can shape it tomorrow." Good advice. He makes a lot of people really angry, there's a feeling among some that he doesn't deserve the accolades. The problem is, the accolades. They are known to be "special".
183558 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 6 kcl Sep 4, 2020 2020-09-04T14:20:00-0400 There's guys on this board that know him/knew him personally, but I think he only shapes in Japan now if MS Surf's Instagram is to be believed. I've had 10 or so Pavels, all secondhand, and the Dialers/fish are no joke. Other boards, perhaps, I think there's better interpretations on certain shapes, but the fish are the real deal.
183560 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 7 JMJackFish Sep 4, 2020 2020-09-04T14:40:06-0400 Have or have had boards and in particular fish from Toby, Mabile, Mitsven, Josh, Skip and others. The boards from him were mid pack in my opinion. Nothing "special" but a good board for sure. Each of them have their moments and some connect more with my surf style than the others. I agree with Smukes that there are others that could make you a great sled without the drama.

183688 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 17 shapewright Sep 6, 2020 2020-09-06T16:48:21-0400 I hesitate to jump on Rich, he insisted to Royce Cansler that I be included in the Billabong Art of Shaping event in 2009. I would win the event. But On the flip side of the coin is the lackadaisical air of how he hurts his reputation and walks away from clients who have paid hefty amounts up front for one of his boards. Rich is clueless to how close he come to getting his arms broken. A client paid him 1500.00$ deposit for 3 speed diapers, this client a black belt Aikido and Karate hired a PI to follow Rich. He got a call Rich is at this place, call him now. He talked to him, met at Moonlight and pulled another clients card off a Dialer and shaped it for him and then paid for the glass job, he never got the other 2. A Hawaii dealer of mine gave him 5 grand deposit on 10 Dialers, he NEVER delivered. Each time Rich lands at a new shop to work out of, I send off the info to Hawaii, he has promised to make good, NEVER

Well, it's about ten years old, half glassed, needs finishing.... There's a story behind it and all I will say is that the shop it's coming from are glad to see the back of it. It appears to be a global thing with Toby... I wonder how he gets on in Japan? That kind of flakiness does not go down well over there at all.... On the flipside, I've heard stories of generosity and kindness and even a spur-of-the-moment handshaped fish whilst the recipient watched.

183721 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 23 Big D Sep 7, 2020 2020-09-06T23:20:33-0400 I've had several conversations with Rich through the years. They've always have been very positive and he can be very charismatic. Only problem is that his reputation is not unwarranted (speaking from personal experience, along with working for a shop that dealt with him years ago.) It's the Rich charm. On a side note, while standing in line at Pipe's Cafe years ago I was having a conversation with an "industry" person where he was pontificating as to why people should just "understand" that Mr. Pavel is eccentric and an apparent shaping giant, so he's afforded the opportunity to be aloof. The icing on the cake was that he revealed to me that Rich was also a MENSA member. I remember saying something to the effect that for a genius he sure acts like a dumb ass. The person standing behind us spit water all over our backs and starting laughing as he was listening to the conversation the whole time. He revealed he currently had a deposit down on a board for the last 10 months and couldn't get a hold of him. To this day I'd be willing to bet that he's still waiting for that board.

A friend of mine, Luke Hill, knew him and had several knee board fish from him and Steve Lis. Luke gave me his phone number and I ordered a stand up fish, a 5'8" stringer less with a blue foam spray bottom. I still have this board and it has the Steve Lis design label on the bottom with Choise on the deck. He was very nice on the phone, friendly and professional. He mentioned he had a used Lis, that Steve shaped for himself as a longer, 5'6" knee fish but did not like it and offered it to me. I snapped it up agreed to the price for the Lis and the custom. Got the boards 6 weeks later, one of the smoothest transactions for a custom order. Course this was long ago and I am glad I still have the custom. I sold the Lis about 20 years ago for big bucks to a collector in Japan. Not sure how it came up but during our phone chat, he said his nickname, Toby came from running away from home in his youth. His friends started calling him Toby after the Disney movie Toby Tyler joins the circus. Image processing. Refresh page to view

(Originally in Slide Surf Mag) The Pendarvis Experience By Rich Pavel Steve Pendarvis is an individual within a community of individuals. My impressions grow from knowing the Brythonic Celtic clan of the Pendarvis family of creatives from which Steve hails. His brother Larry was a pioneer of the "Back to the land” movement up in Oregon. Joyce- a super-cool, sweet and principled mom. Sister Patrice has made a very fine reputation for herself and lives as an artist on the same sacred outer-island where my surfshop “The Greenroom” was founded in 1970. One of my favorite early boards was one he built for Patty. I remember so many things about the household. The heady and hilarious wrestling bouts on the backyard lawn amongst the lads between laminations and followed by hot coats. It was the era of backyard soul, homegrown and anti-establishment. Non-commercial boards were the only type allowed in the lineup. Boards were started at dusk and were then surfed at dawn in your trusted "Surf & Sea" wetsuit- your suit still cold, wet and sandy from the prior evening’s session. Having the creation of your board inseminated with the DNA drawn from that week’s running ground swell was all that mattered. You lived for total involvement. Acetone, catalyst, resin fumes and dust wafted through the air out back. Music cranked on vinyl spinning to accompany the open and often revolving door policy on the way in. Always an impressive cast of talent hanging out. Some of the early peak memories were like bonfire epics burning around week long orgies of "Wibbulator" flex-board building, applications and installations. Anybody from Billy Greta or the Biehls to Mike McDonald and the Pleskunas' or the ever gifted Rick "Ziggy" Vorce were likely luminaries found within the applied science compound/bohemian think-tank of the Pendarvis family property. It was a little like when I was liv…

254118 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 70 trucker Jul 15, 2022 2022-07-14T22:52:57-0400 About 15 or so years ago I was shaping a few fish in my garage and I wanted some inspiration, so I walked into the Greenroom late in the afternoon. I was eyeing boards when Rich saw me and asked, “Are you shaping a board?” I said yep, and he said, “Come back with a notebook and your measuring tools.” I did, and he stayed in the shop for well over an hour after it closed that night going over every measurement on a speed dialer, showing me how to mark everything on the blank, in what order to do every step, etc., and having me take detailed notes. He then said, “when you get your board back from the glasser, bring it in and I’ll go over it with you.” So, a month later, I walked in with a fresh home shaped fish, and he spent another 45 min or so going over my board in detail with me, showing me what I got right and helping me see specific things I could better anticipate next time, how to improve my process, etc. For the next several years, we’d chat (one time he talked my parents’ ears off for a while when my dad was buying flip flops in the Green Room, again well after the shop should have been closed for the day). The Greenroom eventually closed for good, and he left San Diego. Several years ago, I ran into Rich at my corner coffee shop on my way into work. This is when he had the huge beard. I was thinking, “Man, that guy looks just like Rich Pavel!” He jumped up, bought me a cup of coffee & we hung out & talked boards for a while before I had to get into work. That repeated every single morning for a week, and then he disappeared from OB again. I’ve never bought a board from him because when he owned the Green Room I only rode boards that I shaped. My experience with Rich is that he was incredibly generous with his time & knowledge (and coffee).

254411 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 77 jb111 Jul 18, 2022 2022-07-18T06:25:19-0400 I saw Toby paddle into a couple small waves at No Surf in the summer of '90. We were down there for a "team" photo with all of our boards. Wish I still had that image. That was a rad era, when you could walk into the shop on Voltaire, Toby would grab a couple blanks, and he'd do your friend's board before lunch, and your board after lunch. Years later, my last board from him did take a while to get, but there were several times before then where he spent hours that weren't necessary just to hang and talk surf, etc. Glad I had those times, and those boards—especially the first one he made me.
254418 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 78 Veterano Jul 18, 2022 2022-07-18T08:08:40-0400 Ah, yeah the Voltaire shop. That's where I first met him. Had a little map from a friend, brought a blank and introduced myself. We talked for awhile and he stopped finish shaping the blank on his racks, put it aside and started in on mine. I was there for 4 hours. We covered a lot of ground over that time and became friends. I walked away with a bitchin' shaped blank, the first of many.
267083 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 79 PintailNoserider Dec 6, 2022 2022-12-06T14:40:57-0500 Jumping in to say that I've had some incredible experiences with Rich. He's shaped me two boards and gotten them both to me in less than four months. The first one when I was a little grom - and he had Green Room open in OB and another one just a few months ago. I've bought two dialers off the rack at Mitch's and one off a pro up in Ventura. Who only sold it because he was raffling money for charity... and he had others. I had to fight Dane Gudauskus for it (which hopefully tells you how his boards work). Rich appreciates having "clients in good standing" and he appreciates stoke. If you're psyched on shapes and waves Rich will talk your ears off for hours about physics. Surfing a Toby fish is the closest thing to a magic carpet I've ever experienced. If you can track him down and get a true heart and wings - hand shaped board - you'll look at this sport we call surfing very differently. He's back in town. Hermosa Surf has a few right now. And look for them at Mitch's soon too. Maaaaaybe Marshall Bros up in Malibu in 2023.

That is why being a successful business man is not really necessary. He and i started shaping around the same time back in the 70s and it makes me sad that he has gone down a path of being unreliable. 267183 8877 Rich Toby Pavel 84 Hanger18 Dec 7, 2022 2022-12-07T13:20:00-0500 When he was Toby he made me boards under his All Access label which he did seperate of the Choice label. Toby was cool, always a little different but made me some really good boards. Mostly shortboards and bonzers. This was around 1990 or so. In 2005 He came by the TRANSWORLD offices and we bumped into each other and chatted. He said he shaped a fish recently and thought of me and I should go by moonlight and get it. Free shaped blank. I was stoked to see him and very appreciative of his offer so i went by and talked to Peter about this board. That’s when I had heard about some of the stuff with glass shops dealing with unpaid bills etc. I got the board, paid Peter and Sally for the glass job and it was the absolute best surfboard I’ve ever ridden. Like not even just the best fish, best board ever. It went in everything from 2-10’ - completely blew my mind. So with all that said. All the stories, all the drama, all the bad, I’ve only had good experiences with him and his boards were always impeccable. I think it’s a choose your own adventure when it comes to who you choose to get boards from. I only want to ride boards that speak to me and if it’s a custom, I only want to to get boards from people I really like. That energy is real. It goes into your whole surfing experience. Choose wisely.
