166891 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 1 Artz Feb 25, 2020 2020-02-25T10:07:38-0500 First let me say that I have 4 custom shaped Boards. Two I bought used. And two I ordered one from Bruce Fowler the other from Robin Mair. I have another that I ordered from Rick Carroll under Justin Quintal label Black Rose. Should be ready any day now. However I have been hearing some good things about the hybrid, thunderbolt construction of the JC Nelson boards lighter Stronger and feels like a traditional Longboard. Guy Takayama also has Thunderbolt Boards under is Logo. If anyone in Jammer Land has ridden one or owns one I think some feed back would help others as well as myself. I have been looking for a Travel Board one that can hold up too those nasty evil Airline baggage handlers. Post your thoughts? Good, Bad indifferent, what the F are you talking about !?
166893 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 2 Ricksurfin Feb 25, 2020 2020-02-25T10:20:29-0500 I’ve owned two of the CJ Nelson Thunderbolt construction boards. I owned a 9’3” Parallax that surfed incredible when I was surfing primarily beach breaks (Croweater owns it now and loves it) and I presently own a 10’0” Neo Classic (a new model) that I’m presently riding at San Onofre. Can’t say enough good about them, they’re strong and surf fantastic. I can’t tell the difference between the feel compared to a poly board, as they have a nice dampened feel to them. I have quite a few custom hand shaped boards that are beautiful and I love surfing, but for everyday conditions and dealing with crowds, I feel much more comfortable riding the CJ's, they’re just a tool that works extremely well.
166895 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 3 Driftwood Feb 25, 2020 2020-02-25T10:23:31-0500 I can't comment to the CJ Nelson boards or construction as I haven't ridden one. Glad that Ricksurfin is stoked on his! I did ride a Guy Takayama board in Oceanside (GT2 I think...) that actually rode really well. Didn't feel too corky or vibrate, just a very user friendly semi-performance longboard. I have no horse in this race beyond hoping that you find a board that works well for you and does what you want it to do. That being said, I'll note that someone like Bruce - with his experience in windsurfing notably - can build you a board that's at least on par with anything else out there durability wise. Whether he wants to, or whether the cost is an issue, those discussions I'll leave between you two!
166897 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 4 shadydave Feb 25, 2020 2020-02-25T11:43:32-0500 I just saw this board posted on CL a few days ago by a different member. Not sure if it sold but I could not find the listing just now. [link removed]
166950 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 5 jory Feb 26, 2020 2020-02-26T09:56:17-0500 i've briefly ridden a cj classic in thunderbolt. Not a light weight epoxy but a good weight. felt lively and was a pretty nice log, in a classic parallel template noserider way, didn't inspire me enough to want one but wasn't a bad board by any stretch of the imagination and my "meh" ness was more down to the shape not being what im into currently than the construction
166969 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 6 ChoppedNoseSquareTail Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-26T21:40:32-0500 I have never ridden one, but I could see them being great competition boards. light, progressive concaves with classic outlines.
166980 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 7 jory Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T05:10:25-0500 they feel lively under foot but they aren't lightweight at all. The ones ive fondled have all been a similar weight to a poly board of the same dims. They are very different in feel to a surftech and don't feel corky in the water like a surftech
166983 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 8 Planktom Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T06:47:06-0500 The weight is moderated according to the design - I had a parallax under one arm and a Guerrero under the other, both 9ft6in. The parallax was noticeably lighter and according to CJ's blurb, this makes sense as it fills the 'HP single' type gap in the range. There was another thread on here regarding the longevity, I'll see if I can find it. However, feedback from the local ding repair wizard is positive at present as he claims he's not even had one in the shop to 'find out if they are truly s#it or not' yet. He did add that one only really knows about the full picture of build quality once a board gets properly smashed up and exposed to water... In this respect, the same thing that affects Firewires also concerns me - that the EPS will suck in water and then potentially worsen any damage via expansion... Going back to the Thunderbolts - they are really the first mass-produced boards that feel good under the arm to me. If they ride nice too, then I will be more tempted again to try one I think, maintenance issues not withstanding.
166988 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 9 Proper_Mode Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T09:44:48-0500 I bought on of CJ’s Aussie Noseriders and loved it. It was a one board log quiver. Good speed, turned nicely, pretty stable on the nose. Never traveled with it but after a bunch of riding it didn’t really show many pressures.

166995 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 11 Ricksurfin Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T11:01:11-0500 Parallax- good paddler, super loose and fast. Great single fin performance longboard.
167015 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 12 Artz Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T15:18:25-0500 The Parallax is one of the Boards that caught my Eye. A shop about an hour away from me has a layaway program might just drop a deposit on it.
167019 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 13 Planktom Feb 27, 2020 2020-02-27T16:08:47-0500 It sure looks like it has some speed to it in video, the parallax. Felt good under the arm and didn't seem as wide as the dimensions suggest. Good to hear it goes well. I get the impression that CJ had been riding a big Liddle ahead of designing that particular board, so maybe there's a bit of influence there?

167051 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 15 Ricksurfin Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T09:20:52-0500 Greenough 4A. Tried both a 9” and a 9.75”. Thought the 9.75” would be too much fin, but it worked really well and gave lots of drive.
167054 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 16 Artz Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T11:33:29-0500 Thanks , I have a 9.75 in my my stash of fins.
167062 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 17 Ricksurfin Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T13:29:19-0500 Rode the CJ Nelson Neo Classic all week at SanO. The love affair continues. Today was really good.
167075 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 18 Artz Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T15:39:56-0500 Local Shop I say local, it’s still an hour from my home has the old “Classic” on sale for $799. Thinking about putting one on layaway.
167078 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 19 Ricksurfin Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T16:10:43-0500 That’s a killer price.
167081 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 20 Artz Feb 28, 2020 2020-02-28T18:34:38-0500 Yes they got a good deal on the last of the old stock discontinued Classic. Guess JC needed space for the neo classic.

It's a board that you can ride a little forward and not just off the tail, so I think a little bigger fin works well in it. I think you'll like the 9.75".
167158 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 22 Proper_Mode Mar 1, 2020 2020-03-01T04:32:00-0500 Jacks had a couple Guerrero’s $150 off retail
167161 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 23 JTS Mar 1, 2020 2020-03-01T07:55:21-0500 This thread is timely, I was recently looking at boards using that “Thunderbolt “ construction, the Harley Ingleby models as well as the CJs Any experience with brands ?
167192 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 24 Planktom Mar 1, 2020 2020-03-01T15:23:15-0500 Saw a guy with a Skindog Peacemaker in Thunderbolt at the local a few months back and asked him how he liked it. He said it was the best board he'd had in years. Didn't recognise the chap in question but he surfed well and the board looked good under his feet..
167758 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 25 JTS Mar 10, 2020 2020-03-10T18:17:19-0400 I was at a shop checking out these boards. Didn't get to see a parallax, but I did look at the Haven. Looked pretty good, nice foil, wider nose with a concave - bit of Vee with some double concave and hard edges in the tail. Looked to me like a nice blend of traditional and modern Has anyone had a chance to ride one? Jim
167796 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 26 Artz Mar 11, 2020 2020-03-11T10:35:29-0400 I was that The Board Source had a Haven factory cosmetic 2nd for $800.
167921 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 27 fluidworks Mar 13, 2020 2020-03-13T12:23:59-0400 Any Jammers actually ridden the Guerrero thunderbolt before? There's a 9'11" at the local shop sitting for the past year. I've had my eye on it for a more lively summer board to complement my typical logs. The shop is willing to give me a deal to get it out of their racks, I'm just always hesitant to buy something I haven't personally tried or someone I know hasn't.
167931 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 28 Artz Mar 13, 2020 2020-03-13T16:17:18-0400 That Board at The Board Source is sold.
167940 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 29 Ricksurfin Mar 13, 2020 2020-03-13T17:49:56-0400 I’ve ridden the Guerrero. Wide point back, pulled in nose, lots of concave deep into the board. Liked it for beach break, but lacked the paddle power and the ability to cruise in early that I get with the Neo Classic. Real fun board.
177333 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 30 Proper_Mode Jul 5, 2020 2020-07-05T13:57:40-0400 What are the design differences between a Parallax and Vaquero of the same length?
177424 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 31 Proper_Mode Jul 6, 2020 2020-07-06T16:44:52-0400 Cool new looking Haven at the Board Source and surprised it hasn't already sold (although it seems like an entirely different trip from the Neo-Classics and Parallax mentioned above).
186198 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 32 Planktom Oct 5, 2020 2020-10-05T11:32:05-0400 Bit of stuff here about the Firewire arrangement https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/...rf-news/interview-cj-nelson-design-inspiration-growing-surfboard-business/78144 Not sure what I think really.. Kinda stoked he has upscaled and is getting the boards distributed etc. but is it another nail in the coffin for local, custom-made boards, I wonder?
195257 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 33 heavymetalshop Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-21T22:04:51-0500 I've done a bit of research lately, watching tons of CJ content learning about the outlier, parallax, neo-classic. My current quiver is a 7'4 Kooks speedhull, 8'4 Mandala Clandestino, 5'6 MGB-GT Bonzer5. I think I've narrowed in on a 9'3 parallax to close the gap between hull and longboard. Riding primarily topanga, sunset, venice. Flashing the bat signal to anybody that has thoughts or feedback before I travel down the parallax path that could sway me in another direction. Peace and respect's.
195259 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 34 fluidworks Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-21T22:06:55-0500 Just to further the board from your current quiver, have you thought about the 9'6"? That's CJ's favorite size of the parallax, and he's spent the most time of anyone on them.

The closest thing was a 9'4 Elmore Sam's Club that I spent about 4 waves on...wasn't too keen.
195261 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 36 fluidworks Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-21T22:11:01-0500 In that case I say go for it. I was actually looking at the 9'3" myself but figured it would have too much overlap with my 8'8" vaquero.

It's something to consider for sure. 9'6 would give me a little extra push in tiny surf which could be nice. Back to the thinking room.
195266 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 38 JTS Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-21T22:33:51-0500 I have a 9’3” parallax. I like it , seems kinda like a mix between a hull (yeah I know it isn’t a true hull ) and a performance single fin. It a big board (78 liters I believe) but turns nicely, interesting bottom- all convex, no conclaves at all. Fast , glides through the flat sections easily. I use it in East Coast beach breaks I’m a fan of the Thunderbolt build, have an 8’0 Harley Ingleby Moe also Jimi
195267 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 39 Ricksurfin Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-21T22:35:41-0500 I owned a 9’3” CJ Parallex. I surfed it in beach break and it was a fantastic board. Paddled really well, got in early, and was super responsive. Only got rid of it, as I relocated to an area with more lined up waves and wanted to go bigger to compete with the crowds. highly recommend it.
195286 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 40 Gulfzer5 Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-22T11:01:54-0500 On the 9'3" Parrallax, how would guys say it rides on the nose? I know it's not known for being a nose rider and CJ said in an interview that is will on fast running waves. What has been you guys experience with that?
195287 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 41 jory Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-22T11:06:06-0500 I think most of the footage this is a parallax curious as to how the 9'0 outlier compares to the parallax, from a distance they look like they'd feel quite similar
195291 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 42 Ricksurfin Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-22T11:37:30-0500 I’m not a good noserider, but I was able to get up front on mine to trim it. I’d say it’s way down the list if you want a board that noserides. Super maneuverable board that you can whip around and turn on.
195294 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 43 JTS Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-22T12:01:32-0500 Ha ha I was waiting to see if Ricksurfin answered. Nose riding is not something I am good at, and most of the waves I ride don’t really lend themselves to it. This board trims really well from the middle and front, turns exceptionally well . I like it for catching early trimming and carving- gliding through the small stuffFun board but probably much better noseriders if that is your quest ( as Rick said) TBH I was on the fence about getting this board but heard the positive endorsement from Ricksurfin and decided to get it. Been very happy with it. My only gripe is the width (23.5) makes it hard to get my arm around it. I’m short and round - built like a midget wrestler Jim

195316 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 48 heavymetalshop Jan 22, 2021 2021-01-22T14:01:13-0500 Was having a DM convo with another jammer and felt relevant to share here as well. I really like mine and would highly recommend getting one. I had a 9'6" x 22&15/16" x 2&7/8" traditional noserider that I sold to switch things up coming back from a back injury. The 9'6" parallax is way more lively and has much more speed, which makes sense coming from a noserider. It is very easy to turn and surf off the tail, cutbacks feel very smooth, and the glide is great. It's probably the easiest board to surf I've ever ridden. I pretty much rode it exclusively from April - October. I've ridden it in a variety of waves, slightly over head San O, knee to shoulder beach breaks, points from knee to head high and am always surprised by how well it goes. I'm pretty much sold on the 9'6 and will be picking up a volan green or tan one in the next month or so. Would love to find a slightly used one - cough cough to any jammers interested in selling!

195666 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 62 Silver Surfer Jan 25, 2021 2021-01-25T13:03:09-0500 I’ve had my 9’9 Parallax for a couple months now. The board definitely wants to trim and feels very loose on almost all types of waves (flat and steep). Although you can definitely noseride this thing, I’d recommend other boards if that’s your focus. Probably my best paddling board. Very easy to paddle in early and get going. Likes to be turned from the middle of the deck. Extremely user friendly. The parallax outline makes the board feel at least 4inches smaller in hand. Thunderbolt technology makes the board very lightweight. If you like to feel the momentum of weight transfer under you, I’d recommend a different board. Overall, super stoked on the weight, material, and shape of the board.

Works best with my Flying Diamond Parallax fin, but imagine the high speed a greenough would do the job as well. Tried fins similar to the 4A, but seems like too much surface area. You'll want a fast and loose fin, or under size if you want something more traditional.

I have been riding Gato and Creme boards for the last 10 years and prior to that Mctavish's DTs and my local shapers mid lengths hps and logs. I surf Phillip Island SE of Melb in Oz. It looks similar to Santa Cruz type waves. Been loving a 9'9" Creme playpig recently and a 7'10" MOEarth "mother" twin keel. Anyways purchased a 9'11" CJ nelson/ Dead Kooks Guerro Silver Thunderbolt a few weeks ago. Took me a dozen waves to figure it out but this board is amazing. Comes off the bottom like the difference between jumping in a pool or using a diving board. Slashes and wheels like a foot shorter HP and paddles super well and is very stable to walk. Have not had a board with nose concave so getting used to that feel again. I am 62 now been surfing 50 years but this board has given me back 10 years I reckon. Nothing like a tufflite ..... the flex technology really does work if you load up your turns. Seriously want to offload some logs and get a Parrallax or Outlier ...... I too would love to hear a comparison between a 9'0 Outlier and 9'3" Parralax Thanks for having me.

I've only had 3 sessions on it (2 knee high and one chest high) so far so I'm still learning it. It worked in the knee high junky stuff but man...on the chest high clean conditions day...WOW!!! I had the 9.5 Involvement Volan fin in it for that day and talk about whip a turn in a heartbeat. It held a high line incredible and beat sections with ease getting me out to the shoulder for a high speed wrap around to a quick pivot off the whitewash. A very controlled loose feel if that makes any since. I'd love to get my hands on a Guerro though. It may be my next longboard purchase. I read a comment by CJ saying that the parallax is a "stubby" shape and the outlier is more of a pulled in speed shape. I think they both have a fairly similar feel to their glide but the parallax has enough nose to noseride in the right section and you would still surf it with a longboard flavour whereas the outlier is only focused on turns and would ride like a big mid length. Hopefully that makes sense!

201015 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 83 Gulfzer5 Mar 11, 2021 2021-03-11T10:26:45-0500 Quick report on the 9'3 Parralax. I've been riding it the past two days in waist to chest high. Fricking AWESOME board!!! Soooo fast and carvey. Turns on a dime and roundhouse cutbacks are no problem. Sections of the wave breaking in front of you....take you pick, race around the bottom of it to get back to the hook or my favorite, floater maneuver was getting the job done too! So stable and nimble. I didn't try to nose ride but I did get to the nose area for some high speed trim sections and it never felt like the tail was having any problem holding in. I had the 9.5 Involvement Volan fin about an inch back from the front of the fin box. I tried it all the way forward the day before yesterday and didn't care for that placement. That one inch made a huge difference. Overall, I'm super stoked with the Parralax and look forward to learning and unlocking all this board has to offer.

As far as durability, I've only had mine for a month and a half but seems very, very durable. There are some video reviews floating around on the internet of some Hawaiian's reporting. After a year of constant use, stripping the wax off and cleaning it up. Barely a dent anywhere. If I find it I'll post it.

201042 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 91 skurp Mar 11, 2021 2021-03-11T13:31:08-0500 I have an outlier from CJ Nelson - hafta say I'm very impressed with the thunderbolt tech. I've surfed Firewire Epoxy - Helium and LFT... and didn't like how it surfed at all. Don't have that feeling with the thunderbolt - lighter, livelier in the surf.. Feels like a surfboard under my arm... Firewire epoxy feels like a toy. As for durability - I'm 210 lbs and let's just say... not the most graceful of surfers and all of my poly boards are riddled with pressure dings. i've been on the outlier almost exclusively since december 2-3x a week and it has far fewer dings and the ones it does have aren't as dramatic. Even dropped it from about waist high on concrete right on the rail- board was wet, it was windy... slipped right out of my fingers... was totally expecting it to be cracked / splintered and nothing. Hope that helps!
201049 7800 Cj Nelson Boards. 92 fluidworks Mar 11, 2021 2021-03-11T15:50:08-0500 For anecdotal durability, I just stripped the wax off my 10’ neo classic (which is currently listed in the buy and sell forum). I’ve owned the board since last April, and surfed it at least 3-4 times a week for the remainder of the year. Aside from a small crack that was thanks to a low tide rock just below the surface and a superficial scuff from coarse sand, the board is otherwise immaculate. I’m a 6’3” 185 lb. guy with bony knees, for a board I’ve surfed several dozen times to not have any pressure dings is absolutely remarkable. I’m picking up a 9’9” parallax in a couple weeks, I’m curious to see the difference in feel in the water, and if the different thunderbolt layup has any effect on durability.
