101113 544 Anything Fishy 343 LaminarFlow Aug 9, 2016 2016-08-09T13:23:41-0400 The board was supposed to be a navy tint deck / clear bottom. My glasser forgot to tape the paper onto the bottom when tinting the deck! So we went with a navy hotcoat to cover it up. What do you think? Image processing. Refresh page to view

101172 544 Anything Fishy 346 masaloha Aug 10, 2016 2016-08-10T08:35:52-0400 i have a pretty good size quiver and my daughter always asks me to get a pink board.. i have been wanting a custom keel for a while, it came out barbie pink!! i wanted the wood in the fins to show through but they came out solid black. still cool as hell looking. i can't wait to see what she can do!!
102395 544 Anything Fishy 347 Bighouse Aug 30, 2016 2016-08-30T03:18:29-0400 Looking at this entire post it looks like most of you have your leash plug set just above the swallow tail, or a leash loop. Was hoping to see that you all had them set on either of the tails set further back. Last night, new fish, most of the waves I caught i stepped right on the rail saver (thick canvas part of the leash). Was truly frustrating. What do you think about relocating it? Anyone experience this?
102399 544 Anything Fishy 348 fishy82 Aug 30, 2016 2016-08-30T05:14:04-0400 Do it. I just started doing this on all my wide tail boards. Keeps them from tombstoning as much. I like the fcs microplug because you can get a couple layers of cloth on top of the plug for extra strength.

One of the best fish I've ever ridden was a pink Steve Brom that miscreant owned. Always have a soft spot for pink fish. Always tempted to order my own. Getting the little lady what she asks for is just what we do I reckon. Good man. She looks super stoked in the pics. Nothing better than that. Never mind the color of the fins.

102645 544 Anything Fishy 362 RIer Sep 1, 2016 2016-09-01T11:15:35-0400 how's the paddle on the asq? does the hull entry make it drag or is it a solid paddler?
102647 544 Anything Fishy 363 xyzzy Sep 1, 2016 2016-09-01T11:38:20-0400 Only had i out once and it was too small to get any kind of reasonable ride report -- it does feels slower than my 5'9 tyler warren dreamfish in term of paddling though. Hopefully some swell soon and I'll get a better ride report on some lined up waves.

I also had a liddle which kind of sucked for paddling I'm either getting a more traditional fish or an ASQ (or maybe superchunk) for my next board really like the smoothness of the hull wave entry but sometimes feel like there are some drawbacks
102658 544 Anything Fishy 367 jory Sep 1, 2016 2016-09-01T12:40:33-0400 I've got a 5'4 x 20.5 superchunk. I'm about 145 so not heavy. It paddles great actually probably better than the 5'6 x 20.5 keel I have. Paddles into waves great too. Superb board. Mines a recent chunk so pretty much the same foil as the asq as far as I know just a different tail shape
102659 544 Anything Fishy 368 jory Sep 1, 2016 2016-09-01T12:41:08-0400 Just out of interest, what's the scoop on the dream fish? What's the bottom contour on it?

102676 544 Anything Fishy 370 Bighouse Sep 1, 2016 2016-09-01T16:47:17-0400 My new fish. 5'6 x wide in the nose and thick? I'm very unspecific when i order my boards, leave it up to the shaper and always add 10lbs to my weight to accommodate for the 5mm suit I wear just about 6 months of the year. I rode it every day but one during the Gaston swell. This board is extremely fast, drivey and the right kind of loose. So fast it helped me slow down my surfing, enjoy it more. 102721 544 Anything Fishy 374 jory Sep 2, 2016 2016-09-02T10:13:41-0400 Rode the keel today in fairly pesky punchy beach break. Definitely not as loose backside as the superchunk and harder to pull a really tight cutback in a short shoulder - reckon thats partly the difference the quads make. There's something sweet about the "on rails" feeling of a good keel though! Image processing. Refresh page to view
102722 544 Anything Fishy 375 jory Sep 2, 2016 2016-09-02T10:16:49-0400 5'4 superchunk, 5'6 keel (by jools my friend/ the goto local guy Jools at Gulfstream surfboards) Both 20.5 wide x2.5 thick, mani has belly to single to deep vee' double. The fish is pretty flat entry into single concave through the fins with more of a classic fish downish rail wheels the chunk has more of a Simmons influenced up rail at the fron to a hard down rail at the fins
102723 544 Anything Fishy 376 dgarland10 Sep 2, 2016 2016-09-02T10:53:41-0400 I had a Super Stubbie and it didn't paddle as well as I thought it would, and think the hull entry has something to do with it as well. 102725 544 Anything Fishy 378 jory Sep 2, 2016 2016-09-02T11:28:48-0400 I've owned hulls and the chunk hull entry is nowhere near the same as a true hull, it's much more subtle. The biggest barrier to paddling (I reckon) is just the fact that it's a short board. For me it paddles as well as any other mid 5' board
102726 544 Anything Fishy 379 jory Sep 2, 2016 2016-09-02T11:42:43-0400 Ps if you want a ringing endorsement to push the button, do it, you won't regret it, they're ace boards - my best mate is currently scheming to get one having ridden mine. I've ridden a few Manis and they have all been great. The chunk seems to have the perfect mix of Simmons and quad fish. It whips through turns, tighter than a keel fish and let's you surf it much more aggressively than a twin fish or a classic mini sim. There's tonnes of lateral speed but none of the squirly ness you get with most mini Simmons. It doesn't feel like you have to nurse a bottom turn or a cutback. It's good backside too, especially if you get your back foot right over the fins which is maybe easier with the chunk tail compared to the asq The rails are nicely thinned out compared to my bar of soap for example which helps you engage the rail solidly It's been exactly what I was looking for. This is an asq mostly apart from the last two waves which are an arc tail quad but it gives a good feel for the lines they draw https://vimeo.com/133488777

102812 544 Anything Fishy 381 jory Sep 4, 2016 2016-09-04T01:17:37-0400 Just to drag this back on a fishy track. Relaxing in the early evening sun post Friday's session on the 5'6 in pretty bowley onshore beach break. A case of finding the gems with a cleanish face shoulder between the closed out ones I'm still slightly buzzing from one of the big drop to hard bottom turn to swoopy cutback combos. Just got a film roll developed from my Holga - you can tell it's not digital from the wonky horizon! This guy is leaving the water at La Sauzaie in vendee France after dawn patrol as I turned up to check it. He was ripping - mostly backside. The wave is an a frame reef that breaks over a flat rock shelf about 50 yards to the left of the edge of the picture. It's pretty unusual to see anyone riding anything other than a short board, SUP or HP longboard around here. I've been over about four times and each year my selection of "alternative " boards and logs draws comment in the line up. Finally a link to a Michael Kew clip of the Adlers that always gets me stoked to break out a fish Rad style, fun Rincon and cool looking Kyle Albers boards

Took a session to figure out positioning since the nose is so bladed out -- little more forward, little arch, and the thing paddles wondefuly. Gets into it super easy with the wider nose. Amazing drive down the line. Cant wait to get it into some juice.

104887 544 Anything Fishy 401 RIer Oct 5, 2016 2016-10-05T05:58:54-0400 was just reading a recent interview with Derek Hynd where he was complaining about tweaks to the original fish design making it "too easy" to surf. kind of a bizarre contradiction that the merit of the design would be that it makes surfing difficult. is he just a curmudgeon or does he have a point?
104889 544 Anything Fishy 402 pilau Oct 5, 2016 2016-10-05T06:48:00-0400 The answer to both questions could be yes. I've never met him but wouldn't be surprised if he was a bit of a curmudgeon. He's famously opinionated on all things surfy. He shreds the light fantastic on self tuned finless craft, so "easy" doesn't seem like an important quality in a board. I think he's probably one of the best surfers ever. Ever. He's been doing it so well for so long. He's committed to riding waves on a level that's beyond comprehension for most of us. In my experience an easy board can become a boring board. For example a log can lose its gears, especially the high notes, by becoming too neutral and forgiving. Some boards do one thing extremely well. To alter the design so that it will do all things reasonably well... you probably have to make concessions. Quads give fish more range especially on your backhand. But in my opinion nothing compares to the feeling, the weightless effortless high line glide, of a true twin keel on a head highish long glassy frontside wall. I think when well ridden twins are faster than quads in terms of inherent down the line speed.
104893 544 Anything Fishy 403 Bighouse Oct 5, 2016 2016-10-05T07:21:02-0400 pilau wrote: But in my opinion nothing compares to the feeling, the weightless effortless high line glide, of a true twin keel on a head highish long glassy frontside wall. Click to expand... Cutbacks, round houses, little lip smashes and even barrels don't compare to the above. I'm a dedicated addict to the high line glide. My incut fish does an amazing job at maintaining that feel with creating a tighter turning arc and does go better backside. I still think if the outline were straighter and more "traditional" it would increase the satisfaction of the above feeling.

Skip looked like I caught him off guard or maybe out of context. He seems totally into the DH fish, and was stoked about how it is a cool variation on the design. Maybe there's more to the interview? Maybe his views have changed? Side note: about a year ago, my wife had Skip surprise me with a board. Knowing that fish are my favorite boards, she asked Skip to make any fish he wanted for me. He made a DH long fish, which he explained is #3 in what seems to be the return of the DH fish. A few more were made and then the cat was out of the bag!

105182 544 Anything Fishy 424 xyzzy Oct 10, 2016 2016-10-10T08:31:16-0400 Just had my ASQ out at Ollie's Point in small but perfect conditions, and all I can say is: sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. United managed to crack the tail on the way over, so had to do a quick and dirty patch job there. They managed to then lose the board on the return. but it finally showed up a day later -- oddly with no additional damage. Image processing. Refresh page to view

105377 544 Anything Fishy 438 LaminarFlow Oct 14, 2016 2016-10-14T09:48:23-0400 Ryan Burch, Rich Pavel, etc. would disagree. Double foil reduces the lift that a keel can have too much of in good surf. Single foil requires more toe and angle. This shortens the long lines the keel fish are best at. If the surfer is going for performance grovel in a keel, single foil is best. I don't grovel, only fly.
105386 544 Anything Fishy 439 fishy82 Oct 14, 2016 2016-10-14T10:42:34-0400 I'm with ya. They are just very limited to wave choice. If I lived at a point, the double would be the call.. But realistically, single foil wins in 95% of the surf. The zippi I just had in my possession had very little toe. It felt near identical to the mabile on a high line, but turned much better. Maybe lacked a little in high line.... Probably due to rail line more than the fins or placement. Fins were 4 deg by the way, 1/8" toe
