16645 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 5 little AL Aug 5, 2008 2008-08-05T07:13:03-0400 Spent a few hours talking to Gene on Sat. I've had a board coming for some time now but never made up my mind just what I wanted him to cut for me. Well I have desiced on a Sage Glider thinks to some feed back from SK8thom. It is going to be some time before I see it because Gene is doing some gun work and working on a few boards for himself. I hope it looks as nice as anyone of the board you guys have just posted. Gene rocks great man to talk with and work with. AL
16646 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 6 BillyBob Aug 5, 2008 2008-08-05T07:15:44-0400 I know Gene makes these works of art for riding, but let me ask you guys: do you really ride these beauties? Really? It'll be like taking a Mondrian or Diebenkorn out for a surf. Wouldn't you be like crying if you, say, hit a rock or ran it into the sand???

Ride em all. I do admit to having 2 plain jane clear finish coopdesigns that are my daily drivers, but I absolutely take out the fancy ones. put on ez plugs, so I guess that is cheating a lil bit. a little more careful, but they are meant to be ridden and can definitely take the abuse.
16649 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 9 little AL Aug 5, 2008 2008-08-05T07:32:02-0400 I define a surfboard as a work of art that you immediately set out to ruin. They are meant to be ridden. As surfor likes to say ride the snout out of them.

I have these thoughts whenever I take out my Ole. And I know it will be worse when I get a chance to take out my new one. Last time I had my Bumble Bee out a guy in the water thought I was crazy to be riding it. But Bob made these boards for me to ride, not hang on a wall and collect dust. And I have to say there is something special about riding a wave on a beautifuly shaped (and glassed) board that pushes you to become a better surfer. For me this is part of what seperates mass production boards from custom hand shapes.

Ride them all and so far am resisting the urge to put EZ plugs on the more recent additions. I did get a ding on afternoon at Doheny on the rail about a foot back from the nose of this one (that having a leash wouldn't have helped) but thanks to Jim Phillips' personal introduction to Brian the Ding King on the Hill in Encinitas, I got a great color matched repair in less than 24 hours. $40 plus $20 rush fee. Highly recommended. Thanks Jim and Brian! http://thedingkingsurfboardrepair.com/ BTW, the first ding is so liberating... Attached files

Did you have to dodge people in Doheny, hence the ding. I imagine that board slides nice once you get it going. I tried riding a 10-6 in Joisey a couple months back and it was a challenge for me to get used to the size and weight. The board belonged to a 300+ pound guy. It'd be a good tandem board for me and my kid. PV

Oh man, Diebenkorn, I love Diebenkorn! well that's why I got him on my wall, (in poster form anyway). I never could find a suitable frame for my Coop, so I think it's better suited to hang on that "liquid wall". That said though, it's not my "beater board" and I'll admit to getting a little twisted up when I ding any of my "aesthetic" types, but when it all comes down to it, what's the point of owning a board that you don't/can't ride? I have a 10'8 Cooperfish red tiger custom square tail (One of little Al's old ones I think ) and it is the best board I have and I have quite a few !!! I've just come back from France with it and as usual it went great. Forget Tandem with a big board , you HAVE to move about on it to speed up ,slow down, turn , whatever but the rewards are huge. It is by far the most satisfying board I have to ride and I do worry about damaging it but it has to be ridden . I am lucky enough to have a 10'5 coopdesign MF and a couple of Coop's that are nearly finished and I can't wait to see them and get them in the water , which is where they belong. Don't get me wrong , I have Bings ,Harbours, Hobie's , Yater's etc and they are all great including a 10' Trestle Special that I almost snapped on a big day (stress crack right across now reaired) but they HAVE to be ridden or they mean nothing ! I have had some of the best waves of my life on the TS but if the worst happens I will have great memories and 2 5' TS's to hang on the wall! 16665 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 23 slosurf Aug 5, 2008 2008-08-05T13:35:23-0400 IMHO, the nicest boards Gene shapes are like this one. The true artistry shows through. Don't get me wrong, I love the amazing colors, resin work and pinlines, but the real artistry of Gene's boards [or any great shaper] is in the shape itself - the outline, rails, curves, foils. 16671 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 28 deepsouth Aug 6, 2008 2008-08-05T22:57:01-0400 Yes, they're pretty to look at, but all the pretty doesn't make them ride any better. I had a board custom built last year and when the shaper and I were discussing the specs, he asked about color. I said he could put on all the color that's free. And that's exactly what I got...a clear board. I love the way it rides and don't care a bit if someone else has a prettier board. That said, I've never ridden a cooperfish but from what I read here, they're awesome. Bottom line, the ride is what a board is for, the look is just superficial.

16678 215 The best Cooperfish ever? 35 gaucho Aug 6, 2008 2008-08-06T02:03:37-0400 I agree about clear boards with a gloss and polish. Very classic and beautiful, especially with multiple stingers. The thing I love about this one (solid tint) is that one, the color work is beautiful but also that there are no swirls, pinlines, etc to detract from the lovely laps. It takes a real craftsman to make lap likes like these that don't need to be hidden under pinlines! Image processing. Refresh page to view

I know resin tints and colors have been around for a long time and, if you go to Swaylocks, you can see lots of different craftsman working with decorative resin colors and designs. But, the guys in Gene's shop are at a whole 'nother level, friends. The eye for color, pattern, design are really beyond anything I've seen crafted by others. This is like Theodore Van Gogh trying to sell his brother's paintings and no one has caught on yet how brilliant they are. OK, maybe you guys should ride your Coops and enjoy their craftsmanship. But, if I were you (and had the resources), I'd keep one or two on the wall, away from UV light, in a cool temperature controlled room. In a few years, those wall hangers will be able to fund your kids' college education and down payment for his/her starter home. Those that you rode and dinged, well, you'll probably be able to trade them in for a new car. I envy y'all. CoWaBunGA

I do like the nuanced challenge within your comment/question, Billy Bob.

The owners respond, "Uh...yeah" To which the Keno brothers reply, "Well, in original condition, this chair would have been worth $250,000. But, since you re-finished it, about $5,000." I'm comfortable saying it, certainly don't want them to actually do it and, hopefully, they realize that too. But I SO get that not recognizing a joke via a typed message. But then again I'm more of a "F'em if they can't take a joke" sort of a guy (is that why I'm so lonely?)
