233388 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 1 heavymetalshop Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-11T19:28:37-0500 POST TITLE UPDATED Howdy, I'm looking at ordering a custom christenson long phish. I'm stuck between the 6'8-7'8 range. Unsure exactly which size to pull the trigger on. 6'11, 7'3 are of most interest to me. I'd surf it around locally but also would bring as a travel board with a longboard. Shot in the dark but does anybody happen to have a long phish in the LA area in that range? I would to do a temp trade for a couple of sessions so I can get a feel. LMK if you're down. Also, if you just have general thoughts on the shape/size. I would love to hear it.
233391 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 2 mightyrime Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-11T19:42:55-0500 my buddy has the 6'11' he lives in venice. I have no idea if he would let you ride it... he is a very nice guy though so it might work out. send me a DM with your cell # and i will hook you guys up. I know he likes it but has said he wished it was just a bit larger as it needs some wave to work in the 6'11"

233395 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 4 Bummer Dude Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-11T19:46:12-0500 I picked up a 6'8" Larry Mabile Quad Fish earlier this year. My regular fish is 6'2" so I was skeptical that the extra 6 inches would bring all that much different to the party. But man do I love it. Great compromise of glide and maneuverability, can surf it off my back foot or take a step forward and trim a bit. Very good paddler, I use it often for higher tide beach breaks. Not sure how it compares to the CC long phish - you can check out the outline here: https://mollusksurfshop.com/collections/surfboard-archive/products/68-mabile-quad-fish-140521 If you're ever up in Ventura, Im happy to lend it to you for a sesh.

Board slaps and hops and in general that front 8 to 10 inches just never gets wet. My favored length for these is 6'3 to 6'5. I'm 6'2. These are not good turners from center.

Click to expand... yep... i bought a long fish (7'ish) to "try" it... exactly my experience. i sold it after about 6 sessions. in the fish world a "long fish" would be several inches longer than your height. a proper fish would be a several inches shorter than you...
233443 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 12 SMUKES Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-12T03:07:03-0500 Highline trim from just ahead of center with feet so close together your ankles are almost touching is what these are for. I got a burner at a bigger day at Malibu one time and I'd swear the bottom of the j.hall wasn't touching the water. Best feeling in surfing for me.

I keep seeing that board and am so tempted by it! I picked up a custom 6'10 Lane Splitter a few months back but I need a decent sized day to get a feel for it. Hard to justify another board in the same range when I havent been able to ride the one I have.
233494 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 15 Shadownboxn7 Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-12T17:13:00-0500 I have a 6’6” nautilus. Though it can ride chest high days, it prefers big OH days with a lot of clean face. I had a long fish, fun board, but it seemed like a one trick pony. The nautilus will do most things you tell it to do, under the appropriate conditions.
233495 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 16 heavymetalshop Jan 12, 2022 2022-01-12T17:16:21-0500 This has been super helpful. I do enjoy being able to turn from the middle of the board and moving around a bit when in trim. Not sure a longer fish is for me based on what i've read but a hull fish might be more in tune with my styles. I'll just keep enjoying what I got, for now.

233556 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 21 kvg Jan 13, 2022 2022-01-12T22:31:55-0500 I have a 6'6" Long Phish. It's a really fun board but is really sticky/tracky with keels on it. I've been using the Step Hi-Speed Paddles and that's helped it loosen up a bit. It's fun on long, ripping waves. Not so great at beach breaks. I have a 6'4" Nautilus on order as my "lazy" shortboard. Will report back once it shows up.
233565 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 22 mightyrime Jan 13, 2022 2022-01-13T00:10:56-0500 Since this has turned into a longer fish thread i will give my two cents. I have a custom Terry Senate Quad fish that is 7'2" x 21.75" x 2.75". Its my go to midlength board when Oceanside is what i would call medium. 4' ish waves. I have not experienced the front end skittering with this board. What i like is how easy it is to surf. Does not need quite as steep / powerful of a wave as my 7' egg. Its fast and pretty loose.. but it does feel like too much board. It feels too floaty when i try to dig in the rail as it has that sort of traditional boxy fish rail. So like above poster said i sort of just trim it down the line fast and do gentle turns. It basically does not have the loose skatey turning aspects that what i think a fish should have. seems like 7' is sort of a no mans land. If i did it again and i just wanted trim speed i would probably go like 8' twin a bit narrower with foiled rails. If i was more of a ripper and had the skill set to really throw around those skatey fish turns i would guess like mid 6' range.

I loved that board. Also, if you want some more footage of surfing a long fish, check out Hydrodynamica on Instagram (its Richard Kenvin). 234772 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 28 bobsacamano Jan 23, 2022 2022-01-23T14:20:20-0500 Put some big upright Alkali fins in the last couple of surfs in my 6'10 and it's been feeling really good. Loosened it up. I'm usually a big 'use the fins made for the boards' guy and have only surfed it with the Captain CC keels, but I'm glad I tried these out. Made me think one a few inches shorter, with a little more curve in the outline and upright fins would be money.

Now, to be fair I'm 6'3" 240 so I have a bit extra size/weight to push the board around and bury the shit out of the rail. Funnest "long fish" for me are typically 6'8" quads but this 7'6" was a wonderful board.
234828 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 32 skurp Jan 24, 2022 2022-01-23T23:20:03-0500 6’10 *21*3 “Rotten Fish” from Michah Beutz. I’m 6ft/ 215 lbs… in my quiver, this is basically my shortboard for slower conditions. Paddles about its size (not great/not terrible) but once I’m on it, it Holds speed really well and the high aspect fins are really responsive. Not sure if it’s the way I surf it or how it’s designed but my back foot rarely seems to get within 6in of the fins and I can put it just about anywhere I want in the wave. Shines in slopier stuff. Doesn’t need to be clean necessarily, it has enough wiggle to get in and around crumbly sections. The faster and steeper it is, the harder it is to surf
234834 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 33 Couch Jan 24, 2022 2022-01-24T00:58:07-0500 Great thread question about a nice alternative midlength to an egg. Several posters nailed it with the length vs what the board will want to do for you. In my experience having owned and ridden a whole bunch, if I am looking for a better wave board that lets me sit deeper, paddles better and turns harder when I need it to- then 6'10 x 22 1/4 x 2 7/8 works wonders at 200 lbs and 6'. If you surf slow open-faced waves a bunch then I like to go 7'8 x 22 1/2 x 3 1/8 as you have to compete with folks on longer boards, weigh A LOT less than you may and know the lineup. I try not to pull this one off the rack if it is firing 5-6' walls (like Rincon) because for me at least, it feels like a lot of board when trying to cut back hard, take off late or tear the top off. Then again Torren Martyn or Trevor Gordon surf anything well. Now that leaves a bunch of room in between I know, but these quad, twin or tri fin longer fish require a bit of a learning curve as they feel so much different than a short fish, midlength egg or 2 +1. The rail line, bottom mojo and placement of foam has a ton to do with sinking your rail but any reputable shaper can certainly dial that in for you. Good luck in the quest, you should really give one a go and give it a chance to warm up to you. Couch

Yes, they are sticky so the turns are long and drawn out but that’s what I’d expect from a long fish and the feel I am looking for so it doesn’t bother me. Tons of projection out of bottom turns so that’s the trade off for me. Personally, I love them.

I'd guess that was a piseas, which is essentially a fish Simmons with high aspect twins and a beak nose as opposed to a long fish. I mention that not to be an insufferable esoteric ass but because they do surf very differently. The concave and roughly 2" narrower tail block on the piseas really loosens that board up compared to a traditional long fish.

But, in my experience, the tail block is also 1.5"+ narrower and the board is 1"+ narrower than a traditional long fish, both which loosen up the ride, as do the side cuts.

I mention that not to be an insufferable esoteric ass but because they do surf very differently. The concave and roughly 2" narrower tail block on the piseas really loosens that board up compared to a traditional long fish. Click to expand... Ah yes my JH was def a Piseas, under @j_laucks toes now. I did love the looseness and playfulness of that board but the CC is a different beast, it wants to be in bigger surf. I think the piseas is looser but not as drivey. The keels on the Burch are 8" base by 4 3/4" height so lots of drive. But the narrow tail block and side cut and narrow width loosen the Burch up, I just think a piseas is looser if that's the feel you are going for.

His dimension are definitely narrower than a Piseas at the same length (the piseas I surfed a bunch was stock and it was 6'9" x 21 /4" x 2 3/4"). My long squit is more of a take on a traditional San Diego long fish. It's 7'3" x 21.25" x 2.75" with a 10" tail block. I told him I just want to go fast, do fun high lines and do loooong cutbacks. It does that all (even with me as the operator!). So, mine is much more traditional long fish than a high performance-y rocket fish sort of shape. Both sounds fun to me!

The magic long fish for me is a mitsven long fish i bought here 6'9"x 21.75"x 2.75" using Christenson keel fins. I am 175lb. It just has the perfect balance for me. I felt some of the other fishes just had too much foam in the front 2/3 of the boards and i always felt like i pushing water instead of planing. Anyways... big thumbs up for the Mitsven long fishes.

When I asked why not a cuttle the response was that while he has made a handful of them he doesn't think they work as well as a long fish bc they are supposed to be grovelers and pocket sitters and he thinks that works best at shorter lengths and not long fish type of lengths. That being said, maybe ask him about stretching out an orange fish or a "late cut fish" like the one at Resin Craft?

Glasson 101 upright twins. Rails and overall foil were more performance-y. I grabbed it from him to compare and contrast with a 6'8" JH Long Fish with glassed on geppy slant backs I had gotten just before he offered his up - Very different boards in my mind. The Piseas with pulled in tail block, upright twins was better in beachbreak and sectioning waves where maneuverability was key. Also really forgiving and fun backside. The more traditional Long Fish with keels is much more drivey and a straight line rocket on a longer running wave. Pull a cutback to burn off speed out on the shoulder and get back to the pocket and continue. Just my $0.01 as these were only my second and third forays into twin fins. There are probably more experienced twin riders that can offer more nuance. I do remember the first time got the Long Fish to click on a good wave it really opened my mind to the speed and flow of a twin fin!

296263 12089 Long Fish Thoughts 69 shredsickgnar Nov 1, 2023 2023-11-01T00:45:02-0400 I'll defer to others with more knowledge but I believe Skips Long Fish is like his normal fish just stretched out. Slight belly in the entry, then single concave running through the fins. I have 5'10''s from both Skip and Miller and they are very close. There are slight differences between the two. The Miller has a touch more nose and tail rocker. It also is slightly more foiled and has a deeper single concave. However, I have also seen other Skips that are more foiled than mine and have a deep concave like the Miller. The rails are very similar. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fish from Skip that is closer to my Miller. Both have the refinement of a master shaper and both surf great! I'd say you can buy with confidence from Miller that you'll be getting very very close to what Skip makes. I saw some Mitsven Long Fishes at Birds that looked really good, but I didn't properly fondle them. I think they had single concaves on them. I've read others posts that If you order from Mitsven the only difference between his boards and Skip's is Skip's has less tail rocker, otherwise they are as close as you can get.
