193604 605 Bonzers. Why? 300 heavymetalshop Jan 4, 2021 2021-01-04T12:51:00-0500 Looking at picking up a mini Simmons bonzer board. The one I am looking at is 5'4. I have really only ridden boards the are from 7'4 - 9'0 but wanted to give a mini Simmons a try in the summer slop of the future. The bonzer setup is just an added bonus. I did want to ask the group about sizing with these mini Simmons boards. I'm 5'9 170. Is 5'4 too small? Any recommendations?

Looking at that MGB-GT on OfferUp for $600 in Torrance/Redondo? My buddy sold that to that dude currently is selling it - my friend is about the same height and 155 pounds and said it ripped, so you should be OK at 170. It's pretty wide and should be good for your size. Most Simmons I've had have been around the same length and I'm around your size as well. My friend also sold it for $500 to him so I'd haggle on that price he has it listed for.

59641 605 Bonzers. Why? 1 icecreamheadache Jul 18, 2014 2014-07-18T13:08:41-0400 So I'm sittin' here at Burbank airport drinking a Stolichnoe at the Greek joint that's really owned by the Russian mob but fuck, 20oz beers for $6 at an airport and the fact that for some reason these Russians are super friendly and not dour fucks like the rest of their Crimea invading, commercial airline downing race gives me solace. Me and Dio (short for Diablo-- the retired junkie porn star turned NA advocate/semi-pro bodysurfer) are leaving for a month or two in Southern Africa here in a few weeks and are trying to put our travel quivers together for the trailing end of the southern winter. Needles in Cape Town picked me up 9'6" and 7'10" guns for those sharkbait reefs, but shit, what do two has beens take in their triple coffins for a country full of cold sharky right points? I've got a 6' Klaus Jones Siglo flex tail and 6'4" Roberts Black Thumb do it all wonderboard in the sack but fuck, I got an extra space and there just happens to be a heap of Bonzers my size for sale. It's been 20 years since I last rode a Bonzer (shaped by and demo'd to me from Oregon via South Africa shaper Lester the Molester and got.my ass destroyed at triple overhead XXXXXX and ended up with five matching scars on my right shin) and fuck me if I can remember how they work and why the hell in these times of global scarcity would someone want the channel bottom and those anachronistic fins? I know several of yous are Bonzer afficionados and would appreciate it greatly if you could explain the attraction to me? Do they go fast? Do they turn nice? Do women/men find the lines asthetically pleasing and impart that attraction on the wielder of the Brothers Campbell machine? Is it like a Matuse wetsuit and little more than a semifunctional conversation starter for the lonely and overlooked? And if I were to pick up a 6'8" rounded pin in aforesaid Bonzer configuration, would that be something you would want to ride at overhyped right pointbreaks of reknown? Attached files

59644 605 Bonzers. Why? 3 garagefull Jul 18, 2014 2014-07-18T16:27:39-0400 The retro 3 fin Bonzer with the super deep channels feel like they have a 5th gear. I found it a very noticeable feeling right from the first wave. They also feel like the tail is going to spin out at times, yet I never had that happen. The modern 5 fin version has softer channels. I also found the Bonzer 5 to turn in a tighter arc. I've had 3 of the Campbell Bonzer 5 speed eggs, started at 7' and worked up to the current 7'6. I've taken them to Mexico and El Salvador and rode them in some fairly hollow pointbreaks. Not Indo hollow, but good or better than California hollow. The Bonzer 5 can be pushed as hard as you want on the bottom turn, it almost feels like it is on a rail, it is so solid banking off the trough, but coming out of the turn at high speed. If I was taking a trip to surf good, lined up pointbreaks, I'd bring a Bonzer as one of my two boards.

59651 605 Bonzers. Why? 7 trucker Jul 19, 2014 2014-07-19T07:59:31-0400 Bonzer = yes. You can find plenty of videos of TKnox on bonzers in pretty much any & every conditions. IMHO, if you like boards with odd numbers of fins, and you like power, you should try a bonzer.
59654 605 Bonzers. Why? 8 pilau Jul 19, 2014 2014-07-19T11:50:16-0400 From what I've read and experienced. Bonzers are evolved from single fins. Thrusters and quads are evolved twin fins. So there's that. Search for footage of Joel Tudor riding a bonzer egg at pipe.

One has a more standard 2+1 set up, one has a bonzer fin set up. What would you gain or lose from the switching from one to the other?

59669 605 Bonzers. Why? 12 TheEL Jul 21, 2014 2014-07-21T04:27:29-0400 I've only ridden one bonzer. 6'8" e-wing egg bonzer 5. The board is a quiver killer. Could ride it every day in any condition. It really shines in anything 3-5 ft(with power) up to anything most mortals would be willing to paddle into. Have had it out at a certain beachbreak in the "fertile crescent" in solid DOH+ and it shined. I think more then anything the difference is the acceleration through turns. Ive never had that feeling on any other board. Some quads, not all, but those have always been hit or miss with me. Having said that, I havent ridden it since Feb or March I think. It will come back out again in winter im sure but for summer surfing in so cal there are other boards I have fun on. Id still have fun on that but between loggin and taking out my 7'6" single fin for summer crowd equalizing Im happy.

59737 605 Bonzers. Why? 16 Squid Jul 24, 2014 2014-07-24T03:46:09-0400 As someone who rides a log 98% of the time, I found that when I went short, the transition was much easier on my 5-fin Campbell Bros compared to a thruster. When I would jump down to a thruster, I noticed that bottom turns and cut backs were almost two turns put together; a set up turn and then another turn half way through to drive out or back. Thrusters had good projection but it took me a while to time those two turns correctly so I won't stall mid-way through a turn. On a 5-fin, it felt like one continuous turn, more similar to the feel of a single fin. By the second wave, I would be completely acclimated. I have tried both 5-fin and 3-fin bonzers and much preferred the 5-fin variety. For me at least, I think the change from a single fin to three fins was harder to deal with than dropping 3 feet in board length. From the 5-fin bonzers I had ridden, I feel the 5-fin has the projection of multi-fin boards but more of an archy, drawn-out, continuous pressure turn. For the average surfer and average surf destination, a 9'6 log and a 6'6 5-fin bonzer would be a great travel quiver.
59738 605 Bonzers. Why? 17 pefa Jul 24, 2014 2014-07-24T04:19:06-0400 i used to have a 6'2 bing bonzer about 7 yrs ago that was majic, i then had matt make me a 7'6 that was also majic. the fluidity of the turns, the high lines on a face, and the line that can initiated on a drop were unlike anything else i've ever experienced on a wave- granted, shortboards have never been my go to boards and i never spent that much time trying to dial any others in. in a way could almost emulate snowboading on a wave which i was really drawn to the design, as i understand it, is based on Bernoulli's principle, which i don't fully understand other than a more fluid transition from potential to knetic energy with a more seamless transition (especially in turns) which provides more acceleration. also, as it's been said, they were a progresion of singlefin surfing not twins... bottom line to me though, is seeing dudes like kpd, cuda, etc and others ripping on 'em w/ big ole' smiles as my surfing ability rarely measures up to the sh#t i can talk

Have surfed quite a few bonzers in my day from Campbell Bros and others, 6 foot rippers up to 9' 4" longboard. My step up board is still a bonzer. Bonzer = Single on steroids. I have never done well with thrusters. I look to trim first and pump second. Notice how thruster surfers do 2 or 3 twitchy bottom turn combos before they lay it down? They lose drive from turn real quick, but accel quick when needed for lip blasts and stuff that I do not do with any regularity. I like how the bonzer trims and goes straight without drag ( unlike thruster and 2 + 1), but gets a smooth and noticeable accel out of driving bottom and top turns. 2+1 is a compromise between thruster and single, but feel really dead compared to bonzer when trying to get speed.

60064 605 Bonzers. Why? 55 Ticowannabe Aug 6, 2014 2014-08-06T11:36:55-0400 are you wanting to attack vertically or have you resigned not to? i have an 8' mitsven quad egg that i feel can turn vertical pretty well, had a 7'6 ec bonzer egg that was more of a down the line board. i know the ewing speed egg will be super fast hi line but also hoping it will go vertical too (i have certainly seen pros go vertical on them) although i think they are best known for hi line speed... FF,Vet, pilau, jpk what about it? and http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/campbell-bros-bonzer-egg http://forum.surfermag.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1571546&site_id=1#import http://forum.surfermag.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1570904&site_id=1#import
60065 605 Bonzers. Why? 56 monzablue Aug 6, 2014 2014-08-06T12:12:04-0400 I know my limitations, and at this stage, I doubt I'm going to start bashing lips. So I'm most interested in down the line speed, and projection out of bottom turns. And I'd sacrifice tight turning, super quick directional changes in favor of down the line speed. But, if the 3 fin setup offers no such advantage, then the 5 seems like an obvious choice. I guess I'm curious if the 3 fin setup does anything better than the 5.

60072 605 Bonzers. Why? 61 kpd73 Aug 6, 2014 2014-08-06T13:38:33-0400 Strez- 6'9 Vaquero - A more slippery smooth early entry into waves and up and down the face. Slippery as in Fun not unstable. A lot of rider input involved with feet placement. Surfed best, and rail turned best from the middle with feet Pretty close together. Turning like that is Crazy laughs when you do it! Mostly drop your foot back tail turns. Rails are soft and very forgiving making it easy to ride and different from say my Spence Hullabuloo where the rails are more bladed and you have to Push through the water. Super connection with the wave though. Unique feeling indeed. p.s.- Cheater 5's were a section beating secret. Bonzer Pod5 - Less rider input. All board. Pop up, get your feet over those fins in the magic spot...and just GO. Small to medium waves, work it rail to rail and Feel it start to generate REAL speed. Like a car shifting gears. Turns are Squirty. Squirty as in Fast cause you're not bleeding off any speed so you literally are getting Squirted out of a turn, and once you get it down you start to repivot halfway through your initial turn and "squirt" you're facing forward and going rail to rail again. it's pretty unreal. Big Waves- Vertical late drops that fin/concave design Vacuums you to the face. Just Drop...and get ready to go Faster than you ever have on a wave. Ever. Point your eyes to where you want to go and Lean on that rail. Bring your feet and body down and turn as HARD as you want and just Carve. Really full deep rail Carves, you'll blow your knees out before you ever will that board. I was on a few big waves today just Pushing my personal limits. That board full on lets my surfing catch up to my thoughts and imagination. I just look where I want to go with all that Speed and Often it's a highline or a critical section and Not a good idea but once my Heart is racing I just HAVE to go for it, I get calmy Aggressive, and if I fully commit? 9.9 times out of 10 I pull it off. And THAT'S the bonzer rush.

60102 605 Bonzers. Why? 65 pilau Aug 7, 2014 2014-08-07T05:49:33-0400 I'm no expert on bonzers. I'm fairly new to the game and they aren't my daily drivers. I do have a 6ft mini light vehicle that is bonzer 3 and a 6ft Octafish that is bonzer 5. i've only surfed the ocatfish a handful of times, and have yet to surf it in really good surf. to be honest i never have and issue turning the mini light vehicle bonzer 3. i don't feel like i have enough experience on the octafish to form conclusive opinions betweeen the two. I have 2 other bonzers, both are the 5 fin models. i think the shape of the board/tail works in concert with the number of fins. from what i've seen, the eggs work best as bonzer 5s. my bonzer egg is crazy fast and "connected". it is hard for me to make sharp directional changes, but i am 100% positive that is the fault of the archer and not the arrow.
60117 605 Bonzers. Why? 66 RIer Aug 7, 2014 2014-08-07T09:49:18-0400 so is it fair to say bonzer is sort of a middle ground between single fin and thruster? I cannot see how a bonzer goes in a straight line faster than a single fin. The side fins must create drag. I can see how the side fins would allow you to project out of a bottom turn and gain speed better than a single after the initial drop, without as much drag as a thruster with the result being a longer projection than the thruster would give you.
60120 605 Bonzers. Why? 67 pilau Aug 7, 2014 2014-08-07T10:01:50-0400 well, the Bonzer Bros have their theories about how the concaves work in concert with the fins to create lift in the tail. Lift in the tail is speed in a straight line.
60122 605 Bonzers. Why? 68 RIer Aug 7, 2014 2014-08-07T10:40:44-0400 OK, so I am thinking of getting a bonzer for good steep waves. I am in the preliminary stages of planning a trip with a couple of my buddies (who are much better surfers than me) to Nicaragua. Beach break. I really like single fins but recognize that multi fin boards have advantages on really steep waves. Thinking of something like a round pin russ short or a similar shape but as a quad or maybe a 2+1. Would appreciate any thoughts!
60123 605 Bonzers. Why? 69 pilau Aug 7, 2014 2014-08-07T11:01:01-0400 A russ short is a proven winner in good surf. there's footage online of some young non-knost (maybe Punker Pat) shredding on a 6-something russ short in mexico. get one. order a russ short straight from the source and let the Bonzer Illuminati figure out the rest (dims, fin setups etc). Listen to their sage advice. the egg might suit you well both at home and abroad tho? the egg can handle whatever nica throws at you.

I now have a 7'4" Vaquero and a 7'4" Bonzer5 Speed Egg, so I'll take my best shot at this... The Vaquero has much more volume up front and a bit more volume overall. This, along with the rest of the shape & rocker, make it a tremendous paddler -- catches marginal waves better than the Bonzer. Once on the move, it has a beautiful feel of slipping through the wave, good speed, fun to trim and turn from the middle / and fairly tight pivots from the tail to get back in the pocket; The Bonzer has less volume, is a bit narrower, and looks & feels more like a high performance board. Still paddles great at 7'4", turns are fast & smooth -- carvy carvy. Great projection, and also super fun rocking the high line. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but they are very different boards, even at similar dimensions. For me, the Vaquero will be more of a day-to-day alt board, whereas I originally bought the Bonzer for big days (as a step-up vs my 6'6" Fish). It works great for this -- and I expect to continue to grab the Bonzer on the best days. p.s. Thanks to SurfySurfy on the Bonzer, and Pacis on the Vaquero; Attached files
