100038 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 1 newlyn Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:16:36-0400 My search for a new board has, admittedly, been dragging on forever. By way of recap, I started surfing three years ago, I am 41, 5'10 and about 190 lbs. I surf exclusively NJ beach break. I have been doing well with my 8'2 Austin stubby, and I am looking for something a bit longer to get into waves earlier. At the same time, I want something that will be somewhat forgiving on steep drops, so a bit of extra nose rocker perhaps. I don't have any real aspirations to become a noserider (although I do try to shuffle up there every once in a while), so I think a somewhat narrower nose would be better for me. I am hard on decks, so I am looking for something durable. I was close to buying an epoxy popout magic model, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. So, now I am looking at an extra-volan glassed Bing Pintail Lightweight. The board is definitely heavy, so the "lightweight" is a misnomer. Dimensions are 9'8" x 23 1/8 x 3 3/16. Advice and reviews appreciated. Also, curious how the Bing 3 stringer compares. Much appreciated.
100041 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 2 TonyPR Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:28:14-0400 I like riding longboards and to me the best design for steep beach break is a high performance longboard built for hawaiian style waves. https://youtu.be/isU6n7KpLAQ Now if it's not top to bottom then any log would do fine...
100042 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 3 xyzzy Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:28:49-0400 I like something more in the 9'4 range for beach breaks where you need to be ok in the slightly overhead range. I think the Bing PTLW is a good choice. There's countless options I like a Takayama DT-1 outline for size. If you're going to want to get into bigger than 2-3 foot surf (shoulder/head high), I think the 9'8 becomes unmanageable logarithmically with size. You're not going to be wanting to be taking on steep drops regardless, just get in early at a good tack. My $0.02
100046 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 4 newlyn Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:43:46-0400 Shoulder high is about the biggest I encounter, at least at my current skill level.
100047 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 5 Surfnfish Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:53:28-0400 Tail rocker is what makes a longboard work well in steeper beachbreak. When you weight your rear foot on the jump-up, it lifts the nose via the tail rocker, and keeps the board loose for turning as you go down the line. A 9'8 is a long board for someone your height to manage in pitching style waves, probably adding just a foot would be plenty. If you like your Austin, why not talk to him about this next board? And can get plenty of deck strength in a double 6 deck with a rear half deck patch without having to deal with the extra weight of Volan.
100048 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 6 SReilly Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T14:55:42-0400 If you want to stay way out on the shoulder and cruise around then stick with with the 9' plus suggestions. But if you want to surf bigger waves , shoulder/head, get the 8' PTLW. Or other Mids in the 7 to 8' range. Your 41, not 81. Take some risk and through yourself in the pocket. Get pounded a few times and, sooner or later you'll get a ride that boost your confidence and stoke. All I'm saying is don't limit yourself, you're probably a better surfer then you think.

Unless the PTLW you are looking at was a custom, they are built lighter than most boards their size. I surfed one exclusively in the type of NJ waves you are describing. Mine was 9'6", stock. For reasons I would rather not get into here, I sold mine and had Austin build something similar and I absolutely love it. Hard edge the last third and super maneuverable especially on steeper waves chest hight or bigger. too bad he isn't shaping anymore. He could have built you something special. Good luck in the search.
100058 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 9 SeniorGrom Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T15:58:11-0400 I like SReily's advice. Commit, throw yourself over the ledge by paddling like your life depended on it. Pop up quick when the bottom drops out and get the ride of your life!
100062 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 10 newlyn Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T16:35:00-0400 I like Sreily's advice too. It actually got me a little amped up and ready to drop into some big waves. Since most waves I ride are like knee-waist high, however, I still think I need a longer board. I can always use my 8'2 Austin stubby on the bigger days.

100064 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 12 Eelgrass Jul 25, 2016 2016-07-25T18:10:13-0400 I would also say the PTLW is a good option, but i'm not sure about the full volan glass job. The standard glass (6 + 6 deck patch?) is sufficient, and keeping the board on the lighter side allows you (me) to get into the turn much quicker, especially on beach break. I have a 9'6 and am of similar physical dimensions as you. I only reach for the PTLW for reef breaks when i'm pretty certain its going to have some juice, but i actually think it is a great option for beach break when it is smaller (~3 ft) and kind of steep/pitchy, as it often is at the beach. If you are looking to stay with a longboard for beach break, i don't think you can go wrong with a PTLW. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work for you, you can easily re-sell it (see #2 from "Not alone" thread!).
100075 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 13 Makawaosurfer93 Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T02:53:52-0400 My old PTLW 9'6" and the Austin build 9'2". The PTLW has a tail patch and no deck patch, (if I remember correctly) Austin Rocker (No rocker shot of PTLW, so this is no help as a comparison, sorry)
100077 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 14 SharkB8 Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T04:38:09-0400 Austin Comanche is his pintail model. I have one at 10-0. Keep a eye out on Craigslist. I've never had a ptlw but I'm hard on boards like you a stock lightweight would not last. If you get a used one try it a few times. If you love it get a deck patch and keep it. If not your cup of tea then just sell it for no loss. If you're down near va beach area you are more than welcome to try mine out. Garbutt has some interesting ones if new is in the budget.
100078 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 15 Chilly Willy Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T05:03:48-0400 Makawao: Just an observation -- pretty cool attention to detail with the matching leash string on that Austin. Newlyn: The 3-stringer model seems to be maybe a little bit more obscure in terms of ridership. There was a Windex blue one at the Beach House board swap a few years ago and it was one sexy wave machine. I haven't ridden that particular Bing model, but I have spent a lot of time on a 10' G&S Retro Redfin (similar concept, both speed shapes). I think it works well in steeper surf and rides with confidence in bigger waves (head+), although it doesn't have the hard rail in the tail that would probably help with steeper waves. The big strength of these boards seems to be tremendous trim power in the sense that stepping up to the front 1/3 of the board kicks it into 5th gear.

Click to expand... I had a Comanche as well, and that was definitely glassed heavy. The PTLW was much more durable than you would think. I am heavier than you and I had no issues with pressure dents on the deck. My Austin started from his Signature model plan shape and went from there. The Signature model was a 4 or 5 fin setup, I believe, but mine is a single. Based on what I have seen, I am sure that Matt could build you what you want. Chilly Willy: Nice catch. It matches the pin line. Austin had that color in the shop when I picked it up, so I said, "why not."
100089 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 17 081 Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T06:39:56-0400 I've got a 9-10 pintail lightweight and 9-6 Magic popout I bought for travel. Both are good boards but I prefer the Bing. It does not have a lot of nose rocker but I figured it out really quick. It paddles fast and is easy to get into waves early. Catches everything. It's plenty maneuverable with a sweep type fin and has held up well with the stock glass job. In my opinion weight is not your friend in a steeper break. I had a triple stringer Infinity custom that I sold because of the weight. I haven't found a condition the Bing didn't work in. Surfed it when I got it in California on reef breaks and it did well and surf it here in Texas at pier and jetty beach breaks and it does fine. Have had it out in good size hurricane surf with no problem. All that said, I've not ridden it in anything really top to bottom so cannot comment on that.
100090 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 18 sightpoint Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T06:49:13-0400 There was a used 9'2 Bing PTLW on CL for $650 in Jersey. Check the link in the East Coast CL deals thread, and go grab it! I loved my Bing. Can't go wrong.
100091 2802 Bing Pintail Lightweight 19 fishy82 Jul 26, 2016 2016-07-26T07:46:34-0400 Not noseriding... Get a long vaquero or andreini double enda. Talk to wade on here. You and he surf similar waves and he probably has a good grasp on what'll work. CA boards are different than what we should all ride. Not saying all are different but their rocker in longboards is flatter for the most part. I've surfed a ptlw and they work well for waves you describe but there are a lot of other options. Especially if noseriding is not your thing.

It looked pretty sweet.
