The Harvard team discovered that Exxon researchers created a series of remarkably reliable models and analyses projecting global warming from carbon dioxide emissions over the coming decades. Specifically, Exxon projected that fossil fuel emissions would lead to 0.20 degrees Celsius of global warming per decade, with a margin of error of 0.04 degrees - a trend that has been proven largely accurate. "This paper is the first ever systematic assessment of a fossil fuel company's climate projections, the first time we've been able to put a number on what they knew," said Geoffrey Supran, lead author and former research fellow in the History of Science at Harvard. "What we found is that between 1977 and 2003, excellent scientists within Exxon modeled and predicted global warming with, frankly, shocking skill and accuracy only for the company to then spend the next couple of decades denying that very climate science." Source: The Harvard Gazette There is a galaxy of fake websites and "news outlets" and "experts" invented by the petroleum industry to muddy the waters on this, and other vitally important topics in the public interest, and I'd be happy to talk about those, too. But internally, as a company, they have absolutely been aware of this problem for 50 YEARS. |

My opinion on this is the science (record keeping) that started in the 1800's is a "mere babe" compared to the millions of years this beautiful earth has existed. Climate change is real and has been happening forever, our lifetime is nothing but a blip on the screen as far as Mother Earth is concerned. |

Check out the minute long intro, narrated by Leonard Nimoy. It's 10/10 terrifying. For a kid at least. It wasn't 10 years later I was being told we were all going to burn up. Professor Gifford, who in the above episode claimed the earth had been cooling and the next Ice Age had already begun, now claims the opposite: https://www.colorado.edu/instaar/gifford-h-miller Perhaps both are true...I used to think the idea of needing more blankets AND less blankets at the same time was just a joke. |

Stating the obvious But to the point - the link between human activity and the effects on global warming was first documented by scientists in the 1800s, away from any significant influence or indeed political pressure. Just for science's sake, when scientists still managed the field of science. This is important to understand. The thing that is up for debate, is how significant human activity is in relation to global warming. From what I can ascertain, this is still pretty hard to define. It's also increasingly hard to sift through the quagmire of information that's wrapped up as 'evidence'. This goes both ways, I have no horse in this race. |

I believe the point I was attempting to make is we have reliable daily records dating back to the late 1800's (150 yrs +/-). Now can we reliably go back thousands of years and look at a 150 yr window and accurately tell what daily temps were, what ocean temps were, what type and frequency of extreme weather conditions were experienced? These are things I wonder about. I doubting that is possible. I imagine there were lots of extreme climate changes in small windows of time. |

And then there's the big lies, like the claims sea level rise and climate change are driving erosion on Florida's east coast. If you surf and you've ever seen images of the dozens of inlets along the shoreline (pre-manmade alteration) you know if it weren't for the Army Corps of Engineers altering those inlets for boat traffic there would be no coastal erosion issue. We analyzed each season of ice layering using non-radiogenic isotope differentiation in light vs heavy oxygen isotopes (16 vs. 18) as a proxy for to track changes in temperature and sea level. There are tiny bubbles in the ice cores that contain records of the atmosphere at the time. Using a laser, we volatilize the gasses in the bubbles in the cores which releases charged ions which can be categorized by their mass and charge to determine the ratio of isotope differentiation. Many universities have studied these cores. There's a cool mini workshop from University of Michigan publicly available that is a good intro to this type of analysis for folks who aren't in the STEM fields and want to learn a little about this type of research. Just google "Analysis of Vostok Ice Core". |

The beach, in her estimation, is one of the most dangerous places to be these days, as the novel coronavirus marches silently across California. Many beachgoers know they can suffer skin rashes , stomach illness and serious ear and respiratory infections if they go into the water within three days of a heavy rain, because of bacteria and pathogens washing off roads and into the ocean. Raw or poorly treated sewage entering the ocean also poses major health risks. Prather fears that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could enter coastal waters in similar ways and transfer back into the air along the coast. In her research, Prather has found that the ocean churns up all kinds of particulate and microscopic pathogens, and every time the ocean sneezes with a big wave or two, it sprays these particles into the air. That said, from soil specimens scientists think they have an idea of hurricane patterns over large stretches of time via sediment cores. Without going into detail, I would imagine some of these cores are more reliable than others. These show some incredibly long periods of inactivity during the Atlantic hurricane season as well as blips with spikes of activity. |

You do what you can when you can and encourage others to do likewise. Avoid obscenity and derail conversations headed down that bunny trail. Recognize that the folks who work at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration have made a serious study of the topic and might know more than you. Click to expand... Yes, serious question. IMO, agricultural civilization is the very problem and there's simply no getting away from it without radical revolution. If you disagree, you might as well resign yourself to understanding places like China and India will never stop shitting all over the planet and that attempts to reverse AGW, if it indeed exists, are simply futile. I would suggest giving Theodore Kaczinski's Industrial Society and its Future a read, he was quite on the money. https://a.co/d/9FVEsQK Then maybe some John Zerzan for more in depth reading: https://www.amazon.com/stores/autho...571d3e5-4543-4a94-9712-b0bf46fbba93&ccs_id=3dccb88b-b682-474c-8770-a2c1a57d5f04 Somehow every time I go for a surf (usually 4 days a week) the lot is full of AGW believing environmentally conscious surfers driving gas guzzling trucks, vans, SUVs, and Sprinters riding surfboards glassed with polyester resin...if we're being honest 90% have zero reason to be driving these carbon-blasting vehicles. My Honda Fit and Prius work just fine for the purpose of getting boards to the beach and I'm probably surfing more than the average surfer. I'm guessing most of these cats are all talk and deep in their heart they think the claims made by climate scientists are just fear-mongering. |

Yeah, he now says "humans are resilient" and climate change isn't going to wipe out the planet so let's focus on other stuff. Shouldn't be a surprise. People flying around the world in private jets while telling everyone the world is about to end due to carbon emissions...I mean, didn't that give anyone pause? The ultimate graveyard whistlers lol. |

OK, I've got it, carry on, next topic. Click to expand... I didn't blame China and India - I simply said they will never do anything meaningful to reign in on pollution as they must continue to develop their economies, all the while the West is busy removing lanes of traffic in major thoroughfares to place bike lanes, allowing eBikes to run amok because they fit with green initiatives, banning the building of gas stations, banning gas stoves, etc etc My linking to books is not promoting Amazon - you can buy them wherever you want - they are simply a retailer featuring a summary and comprehensive collection of authors' work. |
