376603 24125 Global warming is fairy science 73 Turdlurker Oct 10, 2025 2025-10-10T12:52:05-0400 I helped work on a research project with the Geology Department at University of Oregon where some of the research students traveled to Antarctica to collect ice cores (Vostok) which date back roughly 400,000 years BP. We analyzed each season of ice layering using non-radiogenic isotope differentiation in light vs heavy oxygen isotopes (16 vs. 18) as a proxy for to track changes in temperature and sea level. There are tiny bubbles in the ice cores that contain records of the atmosphere at the time. Using a laser, we volatilize the gasses in the bubbles in the cores which releases charged ions which can be categorized by their mass and charge to determine the ratio of isotope differentiation. Many universities have studied these cores. There's a cool mini workshop from University of Michigan publicly available that is a good intro to this type of analysis for folks who aren't in the STEM fields and want to learn a little about this type of research. Just google "Analysis of Vostok Ice Core".
