117954 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 45 Freddibetts Jul 7, 2017 2017-07-07T12:40:16-0400 I propose we start it like this - everyone throws in some cash for a board lets say $100 or $50 and then we locate a board and whomever is closest to it we can paypal or venmo the $$$ to for the board. Then share the board and stoke up and down the coast. Thoughts ? Board Ideas ? Cash proposal amount ? New dedicated thread ?

I don't know what it was but my equipment (or me) didn't click with it. Plus, I love taking my longboard in shore break. I found it to hard to get my board around fast enough. I used it on a few boards, it seemed to like the Tyler sleek zeke. So, does it stay on the best coast or head over to the east coast?

133157 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 60 Chilly Willy Jun 19, 2018 2018-06-19T13:41:31-0400 The Flothru rolled into my mailbox yesterday afternoon (thanks, @deemce !) -- just in time for a small but decent little south swell, offshore winds, and the start of my week of vacation. I ran it in my 10'0" G&S Retro Redfin, thinking that it is semi pig-like and might be appropriate for a D-fin. I wasn't sure what to expect -- was it a gimmick or would it transport me instantly to Slider's Point? I did some A/B testing between the Flothru and the standard Red Fin fin, so my first impressions are as compared to that fin. Round 1: Flothru. I started out with the Flothru and thought it surfed well. I couldn't tell initially whether anything was actually "flowing through" it -- it just felt like it rode nicely for the mostly set-my-line-and-go thigh high runners I was riding. I was mostly attributing it to the way the board rides and/or the generally fun quality of the waves (although, I later realized that some of these feelings were the fin). It felt a little looser, but I wasn't sure since there wasn't much room on the face to turn. Kick outs seemed easier than normal. I finally took off on a nice waist high wave and felt the first hint of "flothru" -- it was easy to turn with a soft, subtly drifty feel to it. Nothing extreme, but a very pleasant and fun feeling. Round 2: Red fin. I swapped it out for the usual red fin. I could tell right from my first paddle that the red fin tracked better without any drifty feel to it. Catching some waves, I could tell that the board suddenly had a much longer turning radius. It felt fast with some added drive, but I found myself missing the playful shorter radius turns of the yellow fin, especially with the smaller waves. The slower turns made the board feel bigger and heavier and required more effort to turn. Round 3: Flothru. I kooked out for a bit when I got back on the Flothru, snarfing on a few nice waves before I got reacquainted with it and moved it around in the box a bit. All the way up was a bit too banana peel slidey, but I ma…

133284 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 67 deemce Jun 22, 2018 2018-06-22T06:43:05-0400 I just went back to re-read the posts and realized I never posted my review just logistics on moving the fin through the East coast. Tried it in my 9-6 in waist high beach break. The first thing I noticed was how smooth it allowed the nose to come around. I thought, due to the size, I would have to really stand on the tail to turn the board but I did not have to. I think it would work better in long walled up waves. For our shorebreak, it softened up the turns where I needed it to allow me to cutback quicker. It was a fun experiment to see guys look at it and say “wow, what the hell is that, and can I try it?” Very cool.

136616 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 76 Roadmaster Sep 2, 2018 2018-09-02T08:01:31-0400 I currently have the Flothru, just got it it time for a flat spell and there is a small swell this weekend but I work weekends. The fin is in my JP Van Velzer pig and I plan on ridding it Monday for the first time. I will be reporting on the fin and it should be a good test as I think this was first ridden in a Bing pig which is close to a Phillips pig. I will keep the fin another couple of weeks and pass it on to SharkB8 and then to Basenji1703, both local VA Beach surfers. Basenji can then pass it on to the next person

136851 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 80 Roadmaster Sep 6, 2018 2018-09-06T09:20:51-0400 I have used the fin one day in my JP Pig, a small(1-2') clean day, fun but very mushy. I had been using a 10.5" volan Greenough 4A in the pig. I have tried several fins before settling on the 4A. I tried 2 D fins; A True Ames and a Dingpatch. The D fins gave the board better stability while in trim or on the nose but not as loose feeling on turns and cutbacks. So my hope with the Flothru was good trim and better turning compared to a regular D fin. This it pretty much did and I liked the fin but did not to the point of wanting to rush out and get one. The very next day I rode the pig with the 4A back in the board in the same surf conditions and preferred the feel of the 4A to the Flothru. The 4A does better turns and cutbacks and has a looser feel and trims well enough, a pig will never be a nose rider and the only benefit I feel with any D fin is better stability in trim and while on the nose. So I prefer a overall looser board with a 4A to slightly better trim but stiffer ride of any D fin. So in short; this is an improvement over a regular D fin but not as good as a raked style modern fin like a 4A, this is my option only and I plan to try the fin in bigger surf before passing it on. As for my bonafides; surfing 53 years and started out on D fin boards in 1965. first board a Velzy pig with a large wood D fin right on the tail. me and my brother i am in the background, 1965 Image processing. 138985 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 83 Tlri Oct 25, 2018 2018-10-24T22:48:37-0400 This thing keep popping into my thoughts. Any updated ride reports? Been some east coast swell to play with it.
138997 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 84 Roadmaster Oct 25, 2018 2018-10-25T09:14:00-0400 I had it for about a month here in Virginia Beach and passed it on to SharkB8. I rode it several times in my 10' Phillips pig. I liked the fin but over all I like the ride of the pig better with a Trueames 10.5" volan 4A. The flothru was looser then a regular D fin in the turns and still had excellent stability while in trim, over all an improvement over a D fin. I do have a Trueames D fin for my JP pig and after a time went back to the 4A. I feel a D fin is only better while trimming near the nose or on the nose but a 10.5" 4A is close in this regard. Over all I like the ride of a raked fin over a D fin. I think someone who only rode D fins would like this fin for its looser feel. A nice fin but not a game changer.
139000 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 85 SeniorGrom Oct 25, 2018 2018-10-25T10:10:30-0400 After deemce I had the fin for a time and never posted, getting caught up in the IG thing. When I looked back at the pics it was end of April and into June. I surfed it in my FCD Beavertail (parallel railed NR) and passed it on to stoked friends. All pretty similar reviews. Some talented longboarders rode it too. Everyone was surprised how well this fin works and holds even on a steep wave face. Not a lot of drive off the bottom but a nice smooth turning fin and decent noserider. Board in one pic is a JQ Black Rose. Image processing. Refresh page to view Image processing. 164313 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 101 Tlri Jan 15, 2020 2020-01-15T09:48:15-0500 Thanks guys, I’d love to give it a spin when it works out. To be honest I haven’t been in the water in a month anyway. Between work, shorter daylight hours, and skiing on weekends it hasn’t lined up. When I do get it I’d be thrilled to give it a few rides and let anyone else around here try it to. Heck take it for a spin in my pig if you don’t have a board to try it on.
171782 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 102 Tlri May 2, 2020 2020-05-01T22:12:30-0400 Hoping to get back in the water soon after a couple months out and get my magic ham back into my rotation. Still interested in giving this fin a go if it could make its way to R.I. @GearNut would it be possible to grab it when you're done with it?

Planning on bringing out the magic ham deluxe for a ride and still interested putting the flowthru in to see what it’s like. If/when it’s available I’d still love to give it a try.

I don't mean to sound like a d-bag with the callout... but if you haven't tried it by now, maybe it's time to just pass it along and over to @Tlri so he can give it a try. @sonOsea was cool enough to send it out in the spirit of spreading stoke (stipulating 30 days per recipient), so maybe it's time to get this fin back on the road. Puff, puff, pass.
185145 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 107 GearNut Sep 22, 2020 2020-09-22T08:54:46-0400 While I will admit I have had it for a long time, not two years. I had hoped my trip to give it a go this past summer in the OBX, but the waves weren't worth it. I plan to go to the board swap, can anyone help get it to Trli from there?

Refresh page to view So it was a quick session between work stuff but this thing is fun. grabbed the fin from @Bodhi yesterday and got it wet today. Magic Ham Deluxe has been magic for me since I got it and I haven't ridden it much in a while so I'm not sure if I just remembered how fun the board is or if this fin added to it but waist plus and 12-15 knots offshore. Board was stable but in my head felt like this loosened it up on fades. Excited to get some more time with this thing in the weeks to come. Thanks for the help from @Bodhi getting it up here from the swap.

I know @DanSan has feelers out but anyone local want to give it a spin before this piece of art is off to the west coast? I'd been looking to try it for a WHILE. I'm not sure if it was my self made hype or something clicking but I really like this thing. So much so that I had a twin created to keep in my quiver and play with. If the original goes west and someone local misses a chance on it mine is available for trials. Thanks @sonOsea for this cool fin and a really unique way of spreading the stoke to all of us! Going to have to give it a go some day after reading through this thread. Think I'll throw it in a 2+1 longboard with some mini side bites. View attachment 0BE3F425-A3FA-463B-9A58-7BA6395CE49E.png

I thought the same thing about it -- I really enjoyed it and at the time even looked into whether they were available or not. Not sure if it was because it had a fun and funky feel or because it turned heads and was a conversation piece. Probably a little of both!

I'll wait to put his name out till I make sure he's ok with it. He does advertise locally for board repair and after this experience I couldn't recommend him enough. His execution on this was great. I told him no rush but he had this done 5 days after I dropped it off. While at his shop I saw some of his other work on hollow wood boards that he has built and they looked top notch too. Hope to log some more time with this fin soon and I'll get a more detailed ride report once I do.
192580 2241 The Perpetual Flothru 130 Scrapple Dec 21, 2020 2020-12-21T15:39:47-0500 Hola, first forum post here. I started making a few panels/fins at the beginning of the year, w/ the goal being to learn and have fun, mimicking templates that I can’t easily get my hands on. I thought it’d be neat to take a single fin and hole saw it...Ended up finding an img of OPs flothru on a search engine and was psyched by the design. It all went on the back burner once COVID started up, but I got reinvigorated last week and then found this thread. The spirit of this thread made me want in, to simply share in the stoke and again, learn and have fun. Thanks to OP for the inspiration. Looking forward to hearing more about the flothru.

Hah well, not to hijack a thread, but I always considered it a delmarva delicacy. Used to pass by the RAPA factory on the way to the beach. I'm a transplant from VA, but I promise, scrapple is delicious anywhere.
