201770 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 1 5finFever Mar 20, 2021 2021-03-19T21:11:52-0400 I have fallen into deep research of the surf mat. I have never personally ridden one, but I am so interested in what they feel like. I am very close to just saying the heck with it and ordering one. Does anyone have any mat experience whether positive or negative? It seems like everything I have read talked about a feeling of glide where one is more connected to the wave itself than stand-up surfing or a boog.
201773 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 2 LeroyZ Mar 20, 2021 2021-03-19T21:36:45-0400 Just got back from a mat shesh. I take it out to my local reef breaks and usually catch quite a few fun waves on it. I've yet to hit 4th gear on the mat but that may be because if it's that good, I'll choose stand-up. I'd say it's more like a surfing a hull as far as learning curve goes, lots of technique involved.

201782 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 6 Ricksurfin Mar 20, 2021 2021-03-20T00:34:31-0400 Loved riding mine, but hated trying to paddle out with it. I only rode it in pretty heavy beach break where surfing wasn’t an option, but it was impossible to duck dive and I was victim to any waves on my way back out after a ride. Ended up selling it, as it was just too much with my bad back.

201786 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 8 Guest Mar 20, 2021 2021-03-20T03:06:37-0400 Don't miss this epic thread! [link removed] Especially the ride report from the OP, Icecreamheadache... classic! Well let's see... I got one 11 years ago and it became what I ride 98% of the time since Endlessly rewarding and challenging. I never seem to get it dialed the way you do a surfboard... constant surprises. They seem to have a life of their own. Yes, they glide in a unique way and you feel it through your body in a unique way too. Pretty clumsy and slow to paddle. You're one of the more vulnerable ones out there when it comes to getting out the back. You get twice as thrashed in duck dive situations.... dragged.... If you pull the trigger, try to take your baby steps at a place with a good channel. Mat surfing is Hull-like in that less-is-more, don't-overthink-it is key. It can be whatever you want but IMO it's not about hotdogging, moves, ripping. Very "holistic" surfing. Not for everyone, much as I wish it was... 'cause... it's pure fun, it's ridiculous, it's egoless in a way. Imagine more of "that" in the lineup! Go for it!!!!!

And it's often a trick getting the amount of inflation right on any given day. Both of mine developed leaks, and I can't find the #%!#! source of the leakage. I've patched hundreds (thousands?) of bicycle tire tubes, so I know the drill. I'd ride them more if I didn't have to go out the back after every third ride, pull the plug and blow it back up. Guaranteed a set will come while I'm floating and puffing.

When leaks begin happening you'll see a telltale dark spot lingering after the rest has dried, then dried salt at the leak point. I think that location defies patching; I've tried "caulking" it and it didn't hold. If you find a successful way, let me know! And over time, if you surf it a lot the fabric just gets fatigued- you might get a handful of tiny leaks that seem to kick in all at once. I love a fresh new mat; it's like a brand new wetsuit!

I was able to 'cut in line' when a customer decided to upgrade from his original order. Not sure how I got lucky, but my list of joint operations may qualify me as a charity case. I'll try again to locate the source of the leak in my neumatic, it's kinda crazy making that it doesn't show up, yet loses air rapidly.

202022 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 23 Russ Mar 23, 2021 2021-03-23T10:51:17-0400 I had to look this up ... we just called these floats when I was a kid. We rented them out of our beach wagon when I was a kid. Boogie boards were much more popular, but I think my dad kept the floats in our inventory out of sentimental value. He learned to surf on them as a little kid. We'd leave them in the sun until they swelled up drum hard, then take them out and you could stand on them if you weren't too heavy. The gifts shops all sold cheap knockoffs, but the ones we had were built like tanks. They were some kind of pretty thick canvas material with a yellow rubber coating on the ends. They had a rope around the outside held by stainless grommets.
202034 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 24 paipodude Mar 23, 2021 2021-03-23T12:17:31-0400 For starting out you can use a "pop out" mat just like you probably did starting out foot surfing... you didn't start out on an elephant gun nor a hot, thin thruster. This approach will provide the opportunity to learn the basics before spending real coin. Catching and riding waves on a mat is a good deal different than riding a foot board but having wave knowledge already will make the overall learning experience smoother.
202074 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 25 Guest Mar 23, 2021 2021-03-23T18:17:58-0400 I hear you but in this case respectfully disagree, Paipo. I personally would rather start on a proper, fully functional mat (or board for that matter). If it clicked I'd be set to start the journey for real, with everything a well-designed craft had to offer. And if it didn't, someone will want it, it has resale value. Like buying an instrument. A cheap one is a bummer that discourages play, a good one is a joy that "beckons you on" (to quote Nancy Sinatra ).
202082 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 26 paipodude Mar 23, 2021 2021-03-23T18:48:11-0400 Didn't Greenough start out on a canvas rental mat? He certainly didn't order up a top end Fourth Gear Flyer! Ok, maybe he made his own from canvas and glue or took apart a used rental unit, reglued and stitched and patched it up Respectively speaking of course, of course. Somebody help out the inquirer and sell a good used mat. Don't see many on the used board racks at the neighborhood surf shop.

What's the Deal? 28 paipodude Mar 24, 2021 2021-03-23T21:36:41-0400 I guess a legitimate question might be, "What kind of waves, how large, etc. do you want to ride?" and the mat folks can recommend a good mat to start out using. You can also visit the Mat site on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/groups/matsurfers and they can steer you in the right direction. And the sister site https://www.matsurfers.com/home . The web site lists builders, riding hints, stories, and a lot of other good stuff.

202363 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 32 takedown Mar 26, 2021 2021-03-25T20:22:04-0400 Awesome @Skusty . I had the same reaction my first time out. It was on a big, really windy, junky day. The surfers were getting tossed around, peaks were all over the place and I caught one 8 foot bomb and couldn't stop laughing as I bounced down the face and navigated down the line.

207011 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 34 XXX May 11, 2021 2021-05-11T18:40:38-0400 'a viable option for knee high choppy shore pound?' More knowledgeable folks will likely weigh in, but I'll give my dos centavos. Chop is no problem, but any time I take my mat into conditions that require rapid acceleration from the take-off I struggle. Maybe I need bigger flippers or a different technique. If it's over knee high then the drop will give you a quick squirt, but if you're in a shore pound you may not have time to turn that into a worthwhile ride. I recently started carrying a boogie board with me and, though it's rarely my first choice, it's a more versatile option. The PE versions are totally adequate and affordable.

I only ever tried it on small days and struggled to get into waves plus we often have short period wind swell and it was hard to swim it out back. Probably user error I'm sure. had that Paipo ( or belly board if you're English ) for a couple of years. Super easy to swim under waves and will catch stuff that's too small for a log even. No pictures, but maybe a family fun idea for some of you.

XXL Yucca ultra soft fins to go over my size 9 3mm to 7mm booties for my street shoe size of 9 1/2 to 10. Then again I river surf my surfmat on standing waves here in Colorado when the snow melts and we get a rush of water for a few months. Also my booties are usually the dive version with a larger profile and thicker soles for rocks in the river (especially when I am river surfing my ocean boards). Those dive booties have toe caps and a tab thing on the back the booties to hold the fins on as a bonus. (See link to some O'Niells). Regular ocean thick booties are a bit smaller so maybe an XL Yucca fin would work in my case. You might need to try multiple sizes and return the ones that are the wrong size. Dive Booties by O'Niell
231366 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 75 XXX Dec 26, 2021 2021-12-26T10:18:32-0500 What I'd love to see is a flipper dedicated bootie/fin sock. I wear the 3mm O'Neill fin socks year round, but I have a pair of polypro sock liners that I wear underneath that also makes the wetsuit go on and off easier. They may help a little with the cold, hard to tell. I also reinforce the heel by gluing on a patch of something tough so that it doesn't wear out during the small amount of walking that's unavoidable. Going up in fin size means going for a larger blade which I find awkward. Aren't there enough cold water flipper wearing surfers to justify some manufacturer coming up with a thicker/warmer fin sock? How hard could it be?
231368 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 76 paipodude Dec 26, 2021 2021-12-26T11:38:36-0500 I don't ride the cold water much anymore... maybe if I take a trip again to the PNW Oregon area... nonetheless, one can not recommend sizes without knowing what size swim fin is currently used. Secondly and most importantly, one has to find a swim fin that fits your foot & toe profile. That is the starting point. Then, move up one size and see how it goes (take our intended set of fin socks with you). Now, for a couple of examples: my (older) Vipers would not upsize to accommodate cold water fin socks because the rigid foot pocket would not proportionately increase (i.e., width and depth) with the foot pocket length. This is a known and acknowledged design flaw. On the other hand, my DaFin's wider and more supple foot pocket upsized very well for me. In everyday use I wear 2mm fin socks and can actually go to 4mm without upsizing my swim fins. Layering fin socks. I might wear two or three layers of fin socks in cold water. Booties simply don't fit in the swim fins I have tried in the past. One layer used in cold water are this Ti-lined (mine are from NRS). NRS also makes several good fin socks of varying thicknesses. A NRS favorite of mine are the 2mm Sandal Socks with the tough but flexible soles. They may be out of production now but other distributors may have your size. These are great for walking in over pavements, gravel, grass stickers, reefs, boiling hot sand, etc., and don't create holes in the fin socks after a few "rugged walks." Happy Surfing in the New Year!

234611 10035 Surf Mats... What's the Deal? 93 TonyPR Jan 22, 2022 2022-01-21T22:04:58-0500 One should try different fins until one finds the best fin that works for you, not for anyone else. Throughout the years it has consistently been MS Vipers for me though you need strong legs for them, the only drawback for me is I have to use them with socks, not because they cut me but because of fit, no biggie but it’s just an extra I don’t really need in the warm waters of the Caribbean. That’s the reason that lately I have been using DaFins ML which are the only fins that fit me perfectly without socks. Great fins for bodysurfing too, I prefer my MS Vipers but when I’m feeling lazy I just put on a pair of DaFin. For bodyboarding I switch between the MS Vipers and regular Churchills with socks. This has all been trial and error and believe me I have tried many different kinds of fin but like I said at the beginning, everyone is different.
