178250 8551 Bonzers... 1 zalfa Jul 16, 2020 2020-07-16T18:49:51-0400 Looking for some info from anyone who's ridden them.. Particularly interested in the bumble bee and Russ Short models ( 3 fins basically) Have heard them described as better wave boards, or when your spot really turns on.. What works well in waist - head high best? what sizes have you sampled?
178259 8551 Bonzers... 2 Bman76 Jul 16, 2020 2020-07-16T19:51:41-0400 I've still got four bonzers in my quiver, including a Russ Short and i have owned a BB. I love the Russ Short and ride it a lot, even in smaller waves; it just requires a different way of riding. That said, a Mini Light Vehicle works really well from waist to HH - especially if you can get a few different fins for the type of waves you ride. Another great option is the five fin egg. Mine is more of a performance style egg, very thin rails and refined and goes amazing in good waves. And that's another factor - what sort of waves are you riding? Close-out beachies? Point? Slabby reefs? Bonzers are so good. Depending on what you have been riding, there maybe some adjustment, but when you click with the design, they are next level and highly addictive.

My egg is a slimmed-down version 5'9, 19, 2 1/4 and is a really responsive board; very high performance, reacting very quickly, from snaps to full roundhouse cutties. I only ride it in barreling conditions, but it works down to waist high. I have ridden a 6'4 egg at about 21 and 2 5/8 and i think you could paddle that into anything you'd be game enough to paddle into. Tudor at Pipe on his egg:

OC beach breaks like HB / Bolsa or North LA mushier "beach breaks" ala County Line / C street zone Click to expand... I'm pretty short 5'5 and only weigh 145, so you need to take that into consideration. But here are the boards dims. Biscuit bonzer: 5'2, 19 3/4, 2 1/2 - knee high waves. MLV 3fin: 5'6, 21 1/4, 2 5/8 - knee high to HH (sloppy to good waves - jack of all trades). Egg: 5'9, 19, 2 1/4: Good wave bonzer. Russ Short 3 fin: 6'2, 20 1/12, 2 5/8 - waist high to double overhead (almost like a midlength/good wave board for me and my height!) Again, the RS can handle many different waves and if you love moving your feet around and surfing the wave, not the board - think mid 70's style surfing - then this is your board. If you ride mushy stuff more often, then i'd go a 3 fin mlv. That said - sell and kidney and get both! Image processing. Refresh page to view
178300 8551 Bonzers... 7 Planktom Jul 17, 2020 2020-07-17T05:11:57-0400 I'd echo what Bman has said... I have had a 6'7" RS, a 6'8" Egg (no wing) and a McCallum 5'11" which is similar to a Campbell Mini LV. RS will happily surf in less-than-stellar waves, but is a rock-solid board in chunky surf. Egg has a similar range to the RS in many ways, but is slightly more satisfying to surf in smaller/not so hollow waves as there is more curve in the tail. I took the egg to Bali a few years back and had some happy sessions on it at overhead Uluwatu Racetrack/Temples. The McCallum flew in both hollow and flatter-faced surf from waist-high to just overhead. It would have probably gone well in big, clean point surf too, but I never had the chance. We have a lot of jumbled surf in the UK, with onshores and crossed-up windswell being common and I think that the assertion that bonzers only go in clean waves is a little unfair, they are more versatile than many people think is the case. I am constantly swapping out boards and experimenting, so no of the above are still with me, but I would happily have the Mac back or another egg in a heartbeat. There was nothing wrong with the RS at all, but I just feel the egg is a better all-rounder.
178337 8551 Bonzers... 8 Human Jul 17, 2020 2020-07-17T12:03:35-0400 Always wanted one. Anyone in Southern California with a lead?
178345 8551 Bonzers... 9 elFlaco Jul 17, 2020 2020-07-17T12:59:11-0400 Owned a few RSs (6'2, 6'5, 6'5), a Pod (6'5) , and MBLV (5'8). Love the Russ Short. Russ Short really comes to life when there is some juice, and when that happens it feel amazing - just buttery and solid. In smaller or weaker waves, meh, it's not bad but there are better designs. I thought I loved my 6'5 RS and then I brought it to Hawaii and then I fell deeply in love with that board. If you are surfing LA county RS makes a good step up for special days but you aren't going to get that many days on it IMO. MBLV would be a better choice in terms of getting more use. The only issue I have with MBLV is the nose can catch in more hollow waves. I always thought a there should be a model in between the BB and the RS (and something like that is actually an option if you get a custom). Ventura Surf Shop always has a few boards...
178366 8551 Bonzers... 10 Planktom Jul 17, 2020 2020-07-17T16:23:24-0400 @elFlaco what did you make of the Pod?
178367 8551 Bonzers... 11 elFlaco Jul 17, 2020 2020-07-17T16:32:03-0400 The Pod reacted just the way I described the MBLV reacting if you exceed its range which is ideally chest high to maybe head high -- skitters and tracks until it slows down a bit. It has less rocker than the eggs or the RS. But in the right wave, locked into the face, great squirt and acceleration off the bottom turn, and then cruisey and plenty of fun. Probably ideally suited to a long wall or point break.

178385 8551 Bonzers... 14 Veterano Jul 18, 2020 2020-07-17T20:09:58-0400 I've probably had 50 MC Bonzers since'87. I had Bings in the 70s and an Eaton in late 70s. All lengths, templates and 3 and 5 fin configs. Ridden them in quality waves all over the world. They work. But I'm pretty biased.
178395 8551 Bonzers... 15 Bonzourno Jul 18, 2020 2020-07-17T22:48:04-0400 I’ve got 3 CB eggs - 7’0”, 7’4” and 7’10”. I ride them in everything from knee high to well OH. As advertised, the e-wings surf shorter. There is a bit of a learning curve with the bonzers with speed coming from putting weight on your back foot - A bit counterintuitive but when you get it figured out, it’s a cool sensation-especially coming off a bottom turn. Cannot say enough good things about these boards and for the life of me, do not understand why they aren’t more mainstream

I sent a couple of files of my other boards and we spoke once on the phone. He nailed it. I used this board primarily at a semi-point reef break in Costa Rica, in Hawaii and Central California. I modified the fin mix to better suit my shorter board (50 inches), so use a 4.5" center fin and 4 small runners.

Really impressed and love how you scaled down the fin sizes. I have always wondered about a bonzer mini simms but felt the bonzer system would hinder the design and purpose of a mini simms, also center fin drag interference but that Paipo definitelty opens the doors of exploration up. Click to expand... First off, all my paipos are basically 50 inches (it is a long story but that size ends up being optimal for me at 5'10"). The bonzer system should work for you on a Modern Mini Simmons, speaking primarily to the overall plan shape. The aft 1/3 to 1/2 of the board when the bonzer design primarily comes into play. My earlier paipo boards, in the 1960s/1970s, were more tear drop shaped and I used a single fin ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 inches. With a standard Fins Unlimited center fin box it was easy to adjust the center fin so I used a 5.5 to 6 inch fin more often. As I evolved to a wider rounded square tail 3-fin set-up, I used small 2" sidebites and a 4 to 5 inch center fin (eventually settling on Turbo Tunnel sidebites as they were readily available). The bonzer paipo was delivered with a 6-inch True Ames center fin and a standard set of 4 runners, 2 large and 2 small. I suspected that would be too much surface area and it was. Over the first two days riding the board in Costa Rica, which this board was optimally designed for, I proceeded through my "Fin Trials" and settled on my standard FCS PC-5 (4.5 inch) and all small runners. At that point, only having one pair of small runners and the larger runners making the board too stiff for my liking, I used a temporary pair of forward runners, first off a pair of 2" fiberglass runners, then a pair of small knubsters and finally, a pair of small bonzer runners (that I traded my 6"…

I hear most people writing the MBLV off as the smaller wave board among the bonzer family. I think the only tricky part is its slightly lower rocker in bigger waves. I had a really good 6'4 custom B5 egg that was probably better in steeper stuff but not necessarily for any reason other than rocker. John said: Interesting. I recently picked up a Mblv and find that it still needs some push and a face. Click to expand...

I’m looking for a good complement to my bigger boards, for bigger surf that I’d prefer less board under my feet. Should I stick with Malcom the OG, or some other good options? I saw a trim craft recently, a 7’10” Haley pin with a bonzer setup that also caught my eye.

I chose 5 fins so I would have flexibility for fin mix and for travel (everyday travel is much easier with removable fins). And, quite frankly, I just haven't seen glass-on traditional bonzer runners in FCS format, so a traditional 3-fin setup wasn't really an option. Moreover, with 5 plugs you can go 2 or 4 runners, large runners only, small runners only and so on. All other things being equal I think the total base lengths of 2 traditional runners and 4 contemporary runners, is the same.
179995 8551 Bonzers... 64 kpd73 Aug 2, 2020 2020-08-02T18:43:20-0400 3 fin is closer to more traditional single fin style- long drawn out power carve turns and absolute barrel maestro's. 5 fin offers more "performance" and tightens up the radius of those turns, and loosens up the board during off the top turns. One thing I have noticed is the 3 fin is Way more forgiving with center fin misplacement where the 5 if you're 1/4" off forward or back- no bueno. Both set-ups offer the magic drive, anti gravity highlines, and unreal hold into and through turns - not to mention the velocity coming out- Pushing G's through a super hard, fading bottom turn and then up and into a deep carve roundhouse arc on a bonzer is of the utmost insanest of pleasures. These are absolutely Magic boards.

It was well overhead lined-up offshore surf on the Monday Isaia was passing Jacksonville and it's safe to say I absolutely love the board. I had a great first session on it a while back but things really started clicking this session. Really amazed at the speed and actually found myself having to brake check for some hollow sections. The entry rocker is pretty low and combined with the beak nose and volume in all the right places it was just the right formula to get in early. I could really feel the venturi and that deep double concave working when I put it on rail with a lot of speed and let the magic happen. I never viewed them as a gimmick at all, but I'm a true believer now.
