119317 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 1 cuda Aug 4, 2017 2017-08-04T16:59:22-0400 my Vanagon was T-boned a few months back by a distracted phonebot who ran a red. no serious damage other than destroying my classic dub. now after months of back and forth with insurance co's I finally got a proper settlement and shopping for a replacement. as much a i would like to get another of the same (subaru powered Vanagon) I leaning more toward a more contemporary option. I havent entirely ruled out the Vanagon but here are the practical choices that I'm considering Suby Outback - this would be my 4th - great cars just leaning toward something different. Ford Flex - like it, great stlying and lots of interior space. but its a Ford and the mpg is <20 Ford Transit Wagon - like it, good mpg might be a tad cramped for second row passengers and yeah its a Ford. My Ranger was theshit but know Ford can be hit or miss Nissan Quest - at the moment 1st choice (2013-16) under valued, v.g. mpg all rear seat drop and good comfy interior- not sure about reliability havent had a Nissan hardbody seemed bomb proof so yeah anyone got an opinion - its got to be able to deal with NE winters
119318 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 2 pintail Aug 4, 2017 2017-08-04T17:06:09-0400 Hard to beat a Subaru in a 4 season environment. I'd also check out a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Very competent vehicle, not so good for small parking lot maneuvers, but everything's a trade-off in one way or another.
119319 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 3 sightpoint Aug 4, 2017 2017-08-04T17:12:08-0400 I would personally skip anything Ford because, as you said, they're a roulette wheel. Double cab Tacoma with a cap? Subys are awesome and hard to beat. But... I have a 2004 Sienna minivan and I love it. Can sleep in it, plenty of space, highly convertible for storage, comes in an AWD version. But it's a minivan, so if you're the aesthetic type, maybe not bueno. Then again, you're considering a Ford Flex.
119320 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 4 Croweater Aug 4, 2017 2017-08-04T17:25:18-0400 If you want to go minivan I'd go with Toyota Sienna. AWD and of course it's a Toyota. I have owned a Nissan Quest for a short time. Not a big fan and the interior was a little cheap as far as quality. Not like Honda or Toyota.

119324 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 8 Wade In The Waves Aug 4, 2017 2017-08-04T18:26:23-0400 I know they aren't on your list, but two that I myself am looking at for a new surf rig as I am racking way too many miles on my new truck: Land Rover LR3. They can be had fairly reasonable and the aftermarket is pretty big. They will go pretty much anywhere that you want and the aftermarket support is pretty great. Land Rovers get a bad rep, but 2004 model years are leaps and bounds far greater and more dependable than 2004 and older. Toyota Sequoia (1st Gen). Reasonable and other than the normal replacement of the timing belt and water pump, are virtually maintenance free until 300k miles plus. Very under rated vehicle.

119344 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 15 pefa Aug 5, 2017 2017-08-05T08:22:31-0400 Yes Wade - absolutely love my old '02 Sequoia, a grizzly scooby doo, mpg is crapola, but basically a 4Runner on roids- built on Tundra chassis, so real deal Hated my Nissan, all surface, no substance and a pus, go Toyo, there's a reason pretty much every 3rd world technical is helux. Honda Element, although harkened a lego-mobile, thing was a beast and miss that one too A pimped out awd sienna can be quite gangsta indeed..... Doubt it cause of mpg, but if u have any interest in Sequioa take her for a test drive and check er out anytime. I've come to settle on accepting added value of enjoying benefits of said beasts and finding it worth it to cost a extra few hundo $/yr totaled out to get all the enjoyment and added benefits. Couple of bucks more per fillup, but potential exponentially increased- I tighten my belt elsewhere, worth it imho..... Btw, I got a guy...... he's got a lot and can scope auctions, other lots, etc if you decide (in southern MA, long reach) GL brother

The 2001 was a great little commuter and was pretty bulletproof. The 2012.. Eh, not so much. I'd really love to get a Westy or a Subie but a little beater truck is probably more realistic.

119355 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 20 Surfnfish Aug 5, 2017 2017-08-05T11:42:32-0400 Subaru is having noted a well documented problem with excessive oil consumption due to a problem with faulty rings, my daughter is very frustrated trying to get the dealer to address it.. "a quart of oil every 900 miles is normal"... Other then off roading, cannot beat a Sienna van..fit an 11' board inside, handle great, plenty of power, 26 mpg..and has a timing chain, no timing belts to replace. Other then oil changes, there is zero maintenance on them.. And if you need off road capability, was very surprised when I used my son's 4wd element during one visit..surprising comfortable, LB fit inside..
119365 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 21 cuda Aug 5, 2017 2017-08-05T15:16:01-0400 what year Subaru? hard to argue about the Sienna. I just dont like the that the 2nd row seats dont drop to the floor for hauling stuff. This is the main reason Im looking more at the Quest. I would love a Hybrid Pacifica but too much scratch. My budget is $20k max like to get closer to $15

Plenty of room and the kids choice for road trips every time. I get 18-19 mpg in the city too. Pretty amazing. Oh, I have a high rise shell or would be doing even better. I say this, as sometimes the vehicles you may not thing of are actually pretty good.

119376 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 25 Surfnfish Aug 5, 2017 2017-08-05T19:07:15-0400 issue is with 2011 - 2014 Sub's.. my daughters Outback is a 2014 yea, nice to have the fold flat chairs..middle row does fold and tilt forward, and we just keep the middle center seat stored in the garage..check Consumer Reports and JD Power, Nissan Quest has pretty poor ratings for mechanical issues..Sienna highest rating across the board..I personally like the 2008' - 2009' body style and interior better then the changeover in 2010, bit trimmer, and 2008 is when they went to the timing chain driven 285 hp 6 cyl, which is the best engine Toy has ever made..pick up a nice one for under 20K for sure..
119385 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 26 sightpoint Aug 6, 2017 2017-08-05T22:16:12-0400 I took the second row seats out of my sienna entirely. It still seats 5 when the back row seats are up, but I usually just have one of them upright for easier winter wetsuit changing. But yeah, having them fold completely flat would be ideal.
119387 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 27 Mcrockett77 Aug 6, 2017 2017-08-05T22:54:16-0400 We have a 2013 flex. It's been a good car with no real issues in the 40k miles we've had it. Lots of room inside and low so easy to load boards on the rack. However, we average around 20 mpg with mixed city and highway driving.
119479 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 28 Fishy Aug 9, 2017 2017-08-08T21:26:55-0400 2014 Ford Flex Ecoboost AWD. I love it! Lots of power and good handling for a flying brick. True about the mpg. I'd get better mileage if I wasn't hammering the throttle all the time. Also can load several big boards inside when needed.

119482 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 30 WhiteRussian Aug 9, 2017 2017-08-08T22:44:42-0400 Obviously, it's all about preferences - what is more important as a primary function. miniVan vs SUV vs wagon ..etc. I'm a wagon guy. 2006 Volvo V70 - myself. 2005 XC70 - my son (who was debating if he wants to have a wagon, but now he loves it ). Can fit 10 footer (and 1-2 shorter board on top of it) inside with one more seat still available and still cruise at speed limit. Pretty much the same car in production since 2001, all the way to 2015. Awesome seats, AWD. Very big storage area, or fold rear seats and you have completely flat steeping surface for two. AWD is not as good as Audi (not sure about Subie) but still sufficient enough in NE. I was thinking about getting 2015 (last year with 3.0 liters turbo engine) but still not ready to give up the manual tranny.
119487 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 31 PeakMaster Aug 9, 2017 2017-08-09T06:56:38-0400 You can bank on a a head gasket job on a Subaru with the boxer four. Google it. Problem is not resolved and has plagued them since the late 90's. Between 90-120K miles. If you're looking for strictly a surf vehicle, a decent used Volvo wagon...older is better. The 9 series are big, boxy ("Bricks") but have bulletproof engines and transmissions and are roomy. The non turbo fours can't get out of their own way but will get you wherever reliably. The 8 series are probably easier to find these days. Many still have old school rain gutters for real racks too. Just flipped my 2006 XC90 2.5T over to my son. It's been super reliable, tons of room and minimal cost to own. Mileage...18 mpg. Behind the curve with Bluetooth. ..but aftermarket solutions work OK. There are a lot of used ones out there. The 2.5 engine and drive train are the most reliable. What White Russian said too. I think the AWD was stolen directly from Audio as was the five cylinder engine design. The AWD uses the Haldex power transfer system just like Audi....but there are likely more refinements in the Quatro system.
119488 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 32 GearNut Aug 9, 2017 2017-08-09T08:14:51-0400 I think it is funny. I have had six Subarus, most were Outbacks. All went over 300,000 miles and none ever had an oil leak or needed a head gasket. In fact the first one went over 600,000 miles with the original motor, trans and even turbo, but never had to do the head gasket. That said, I changed my oil and filter every 3,000 miles and used quality oil and filter. While I love my Subarus, I don't think I would buy a used one. If you don't take care of them, those aluminum blocks can be a nightmare. But if you are buying new and take care of it, they are hard to beat. I put multiple long boards inside and have as many as eleven on the roof, I will have to look for that picture.

Solid car but for the head gasket ar 90k. Found a guy in PA that only worked on Subarus. Used a Ford F150 and a trailer and would pick your car up, tow it to his place near Reading I think and do the head gasket job.... $1100. Only issue I had with that car...couldn't change all 4 plugs myself as I recall.
119490 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 34 Roadmaster Aug 9, 2017 2017-08-09T09:06:42-0400 For the budget minded you cannot beat a full sized american station wagon. The last full sized wagons were the Buick and Chevy up till 96 and the latter years featured a de-tuned LT1 Corvette engine with 260hp. Oldsmobile also made the same body style but only in 91 and 92. My 1992 Buick Roadmaster will fit an 11' board without the fin inside the car with tailgate closed. My 10'4" JP Ka Po'e Ae'a fits inside with the fin on, I think a board up to 10'8" would fit inside with the fin on. My 92 has the lower power 350cu engine with only 180hp but decent torque at 300lb.ft. I looked for one with the better engine but could not find one that was not ragged out or overpriced. The wagons with the corvette engine cost up to $5000 more for a creampuff. I got my 92 estate wagon from a little old lady in Delaware for $5K who kept it in the garage, with 93K miles. Leather seats, power everything and runs like a top, about 18mpg on the highway, but no monthly payments to worry about so gas is not an issue. I got very dark tinted windows on the rear windows that keep things cool and still pass state inspection. Its my ride Image processing. Refresh page to view

Ended up doing head caskets, cat heat shields and timing belt service ($1800 @ dealer) in 2014 with 84,000 miles. It seems most owners get rid of them when it's time for the timing belt service. Other than that it's been a good car but we only put about 5,000 miles a year on it.

125549 4112 help picking a new surf vehic 63 nedsurf Dec 10, 2017 2017-12-10T16:36:44-0500 Paying that kind of $$ for a 27 year old vehicle that lived overseas most of it's life with an unknown service or usage record (it is designed as "adventure" off-the-road) doesn't make sense to me. Not to mention you will have all the disadvantages of a right hand drive in a left hand drive world. Too many other good options from my standpoint, but it isn't my money. Regarding Acura MDX, same as my Honda Pilot, up to 11' board inside (without a passenger), roof rack for boards if you want, comfort, good mileage, quality (my 2004 has 170k miles) and a great family car to boot if that is a requirement. You can sleep in it too without dragging around all the weight, length and gas mileage of a van. Just my opinion.
