Just picked up a 9'6 John Peck shaped (so im told) Penetrator from the early 2000's in Hanalei Bay. Apparently, he made it a bit narrower for the Bay waves specifically. Previous owner had a 7.5 4a in it which seems superrr small, so I'm headed out to purchase probably a 9inch or so right now. He mentioned that he didn't really enjoy the ride as it was more of a trim machine than anything else. Interested to hear what everyone else is throwing in here for a fin + expectations/things to look out for on such a log. It's absolutely pouring right now in Kauai and the bay looks like chocolate milk so I may give it a few days to settle down but stoked to try it out! 200943 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 206 Sax-son Mar 10, 2021 2021-03-10T16:36:59-0500 I don't have any experience with John Peck's shaping, but I am sure he does a good job. However, Dennis Ryder was one of the guys who were pounding them out in the mid 1960's so I would go with him. I have seen some of Dennis Ryder's retro Penetrators' and they look authentic although I personally never liked those boards. However, I am sure there are some who do like them.

Never tried a Penetrator but really like a wingnose board. I have two that are keepers. 1) 10’ vintage Surfboards Hawaii NR 2) 9’10” JP Blue Max Both very different boards but excellent!
207456 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 208 pointsurfer May 16, 2021 2021-05-16T15:42:45-0400 For all of you who didn't know. Dennis Ryder actually shaped the first Peck Penetrator. John did the template and roughed it out. Dennis did the rest of the design.
207870 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 209 Sax-son May 20, 2021 2021-05-20T10:21:43-0400 As a teenager, I rode about every Morey-Pope model that was ever made. Many of my surf buddies owned them. The shop was only 10 miles from my home so there were plenty around at the time. "The Eliminator", "AAA Contender", "Penetrator", "Blue Machine", "Camel" were some of their top models. Aside from Bob Cooper's "Blue Machine", none of those boards were really my cup of tea. I was more inclined to some of the Bing, Yater, and Weber models. During the early 1970's, I had so many that were left at my beach house, I had to give away at least a dozen or so because there was no room left in my yard. You can only fit so many surfboards on a 25' X 75' beach lot. A couple of those I wished I had kept.

I guess that's probably a subjective question, but I wonder. While Peck is the surfer, Ryder is the shaper. Do you go with the legend, or the one who made the board under the legend's feet?
34192 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 2 sterling Nov 22, 2011 2011-11-22T07:36:20-0500 I dunno...but I have a pristine 9.6 shaped by Dennis with the slip check..that has been surfed like 3 times FOR SALE to Jamboarders at $700 cash ...new ones are, you know, pricier by far

I have a Dennis Ryder one and one shaped by John Peck, signed by him, "for Robby Kegel"....also one by Matt Calvani, 9.8 wing nose to 50/50 pinched rails to a nice 5" tail block square-tail with perfect tail flip...entry rocker is super flat...one of my very favorite boards of all time...I have to remember to stall it prior to walking, so very fast...one of my fastest single fin longboard....my fastest yet are John Wesley's shapes, the WASP amazing its mini-squash, like the Pecks

34209 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 12 takefive Nov 22, 2011 2011-11-22T14:00:29-0500 Thats what takes getting use to on the penetrators is the speed you get on the nose. Most boards slow down and stall for hang time but the wing nose takes flight. Being a goofy foot and surfing rincon most of my life made its tough at times with the old rail grab but not if you have speed via flat nose down rail. I remember watching cooper and peck make sections at Rincon that no one else could and cooper would do it hanging ten.

34225 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 27 NewportGeek Nov 23, 2011 2011-11-23T03:58:58-0500 whale tail rocker makes for lots of stalling and a shorter, looser turn radius. also the tyler wingnose is substantially wider than Penetrators. I think the wing nose I saw was 23" (and change.) Johns boards are usually in the 21"-21.5" range. A wingnose group sounds like a good idea to me!

34302 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 60 takefive Nov 25, 2011 2011-11-25T03:30:22-0500 I like the classic penetrator tail and kick for beach breaks, but would like to try Tyler and compare. The classic more roll in bottom and more width makes for a old school stall. But the wing nose is still a bit to fast for beach breaks out racing the wave. The tail having more kick should help slow it down. 34303 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 61 whale Nov 25, 2011 2011-11-25T03:34:36-0500 Thanks, Stef. I'm glad my questions have facilitated a great discussion and perhaps even a get together, but I am really interested in getting info on the wingnose and penetrator. As I live on the east coast, I need a board that can handle beach break well, so it seems the Tyler might be better. But the penetrator has such history, and looks so badass, that I'm having a hard time making a decision.
34304 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 62 Stef Nov 25, 2011 2011-11-25T03:52:07-0500 and know my hesitancy in answering is not being a jackass, hopefully it didnt sound as such, but for these reasons. 1) i have not surfed a penetrator except for once 10 years ago and honestly cant remember what it was like, though it was in beach break. 2) i am always being told, that i am not surfing appropriate board for the conditions. some of which is their ignorance as they are one dimensional in their equipment. this is coming from people that think i need to hack my fin off my vintage nuuhiwa and move it forward because its too far back. 3) perception is everything with surfing . i see it on here when someone is passionate about their board, they feel theirs is "the best" (my bing is the best noserider or paddler , or my coop or phillips is.......) but there are so many variables. experience , conditions, height /weight...what i like , you might not like, most of my friends dont like my boards, and i can say the same. 4) for instance the in the pink thread, my experience is that surftechs are corky, but ratzax insists that to him they are not. because thats his experience. so i dont want to say yes it is better , but for me it works good in beachbreak. so with that, who is not to say , that the penetrator feels better at your homebreak for you.
34305 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 63 Stef Nov 25, 2011 2011-11-25T03:57:51-0500 and one last thing, sometimes i think its best to find that board that speaks to you and surf it, learn it, regardless of if someone thinks it good or better, it speaks to you. i have done that a fair amount, most of my boards i have are because they spoke to me.
34307 409 Who makes a better Penetrator 64 pointsurfer Nov 25, 2011 2011-11-25T07:55:39-0500 Great thread “Whale”! I feel that neither Dennis or John make a better board. It’s subjective and they are not in competition with each other. But please note that Dennis Ryder is the only person that is indorsed by John to make signature Penetrators. Dennis told me a great story about John, after surfing together on Kauai in 2005, John told Dennis that he had made him his most all time favorite board back in 1967. John took the board to Peru for one of the surf contest there. While there, John met a kid that was really stoked on surfing but was really poor, John said he could surf really well but didn’t have a board. So John gave him his all time favorite board. A tribute to what kind of guy John is. Dennis shaped that board for John when he was only 19 years old. The Penetrator is a classic board, period. When you see one of the old ones you know exactly what it is. There are few boards in surfing history like that. Think, Phil Edwards model, David Nuuhiwa nose rider, ect. This is why Dennis likes the classic shapes, and continues to shape them today. And how rare is it that the same guy that shaped this classic board in the early days still does it today. John Peck has a “Rocket” Penetrator on order with Dennis right now. Attached files
