I like the fin as well it's the system that's not so great. My Hannon's have the same fin system. This one has been drilled and is a little loose so that will be taken care of. I assume you still have your competitor, you gave it very high marks at the beginning of this thread. 😄

For some reason I really can't explain, I just preferred the 9'6. I'm usually riding 9'10 to 10' boards, so your's got my attention.

While I'm a big Hansen fan I don't own a Hansen board so I think my tee should go to someone out there who's a board owner and would appreciate the tee. Let's see some Hansen board board. Smokey has/had a realy nice blue 50/50 rental. 9'2" I believe. I haven't seen it around for a while, so he might have sold it. NJrider has a minty 50/50 in his ceiling. Don't know if it is for sale, but you can check with him. 9'2" I think. There is also a nice on in the rafter at Spellbinders in Allenhurst, but is basically not for sale, but the guy will throw out a crazy number every now and then to see if someone bites. Minty 50/50's pop up from time to time. If I see one, I will let you know. I've helped a few 50-50's find new owners over the years. Someone on here in VA beach had a real clean rental for sale not too long ago, but it was a shorter 50/50. Forget the dims but you can probably it with a search.

I agree, I have owned both a competitor and a 50-50 both vintage (1967) and have seen modern versions and they don't compare. also had a mini version of that mike doyle above - it was a super V bottom - i surfed it for awhile then sold it to a friend who collects hansens. that 9-4 looks sweet.

44915 403 Hansen Fans 51 DownSouthSlidah Feb 17, 2013 2013-02-17T09:46:36-0500 Yes. Not even close. Same name. That's about it. Thats why so many people look for and own the vintage ones. Plus many vintage 50-50 riders are cheaper than the new. Closest new board to a classic 50-50 is the Tyler 777 IMO. Scott Anderson makes a "51-50" version that is modernized and Austin makes his .51 that seems true to its roots but ive never read a review. Those are the closest to the originals I know of.
44916 403 Hansen Fans 52 garagefull Feb 17, 2013 2013-02-17T10:44:01-0500 The original Competitor is one of the best noseriding models from the 60's. I think a couple of key features are the flat bottom wing nose and the reverse rocker, with extra kick in the tail. I haven't ridden any of the modern Competitors, but I have checked them out in the shop. The new ones don't have a wing nose and the rocker profile looks different. If I was after a new board that was similar to the vintage Competitor, I go to an experienced shaper and have it custom shaped. Somebody like Jim Phillips would be a good choice.

That wide "chip" thing works - the 50-50 or 777: "personality" wise the boards just want to party!

But the "modern" versions shaped by Hank Byzak specifically remained true to the original intent on quality and design. At very least his shapes should not be excluded.

56310 403 Hansen Fans 88 robsawyer Mar 4, 2014 2014-03-04T08:00:27-0500 This 60's Hansen Mike Doyle is for sale near my casa. I have considered driving by to look at it. Only 8' long which is a strange length for me. http://houston.craigslist.org/spo/4322918284.html Attached files
56322 403 Hansen Fans 89 garagefull Mar 4, 2014 2014-03-04T14:39:25-0500 Rob, I have one of those. Mine is an 8'2. It has a really deep V bottom. Almost feels like it "flops" over from one side of the V to the other when you do a turn. Once you commit to a turn in one direction, it seems really hard to correct and go back the other way. I'll admit I haven't put enough time in to it to get it dialed in. There are other V bottoms from that era with less pronounced V's that are probably easier to ride. I'm a big fan of the Hansen longboards from the 60's, so I'm kind of reluctant to criticize the V bottom. Nick
56328 403 Hansen Fans 90 SeniorGrom Mar 5, 2014 2014-03-04T22:33:55-0500 Some might disagree, but when I see videos of McTavish and Nat Young on those early "V" bottom boards, it's really clear how limited they were. Yes they were innovative and radical for the time but, changes in board length and design were happening fast. Seems those "V" bottoms lasted only a few weeks or months for a reason.

Click to expand... This is probably quite true. I believe the "dedicated" V bottoms of yesteryear were way more pronounced and as with most things hit a point of diminishing returns. This particular Hansen looks OK but it appears to be overpriced from what I can tell from the pics. For sure a decent mid-length vintage board to own but not at $650.
