How much foam does one need. I can catch a wave, stop to eat a sandwich, then start a bottom turn on a 9'... With time to spare. Wasn't Jim saying something about people overcompensating with foam....

I just wasted a few minutes of my life on that video. Still of the mindset anything over 10' is not needed. Rode my 8'8 yesterday and was still in super early. Huge fade then bottom turn, then stall, with plenty of time to spare... in a fast beachbreak ... different strokes i guess
114349 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 184 JMJackFish Apr 26, 2017 2017-04-26T16:37:33-0400 Surfed some real fun waves today on my Murphy fish/egg with some buddies. Switched off with them to ride a new 10'6 Phil Edwards Glider and an 11' Hobie Blackbeard Glider. 3 1/2 hour session and all boards were dialed in. The gliders were insane - in early and fast as hell down the line. They really work here.

114364 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 189 JMJackFish Apr 27, 2017 2017-04-27T05:54:19-0400 The Blackbeard has thinner rails and is glassed lighter than the new Phil Glider. It has a triple stick, but the side ones were thin. No tail block on it. The nose and tail were also different. You could nose ride the Blackbeard. The Phil has triple stick redwood, tail block, volan with big patch. It has a similar shape to the old Phil Edwards model but is thicker everywhere. Gorgeous board. Both were super fun and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Hope to get one of each...

Have come across some snippets about Larry Mabile doing this style, can't find much info on his web site. Any other shapers you'd recommend for a BB glider whose web site I can view for some ideas?

Click to expand... would welcome feedback from anyone who has ridden the respective shapes. Click to expand... Have Both Flavors. In my opinion the Mabile is a little more user friendly rail wise more of a 60/40 vice the egg rail,(Skip Frye style) I think Larry Mabile puts a little more "Hip" back by the tail that makes his boards come around quicker. The Mitsven is fast but you have to surf it with a little more finesse and let the board do the work. IMHO the better alternative is Michael Miller, a true craftsman, solid person and some of the finest work around these parts! His creations work very well.
81079 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 6 cuda Oct 15, 2015 2015-10-15T14:53:34-0400 Skip's Eagles, what all "glider" boards are based off were designed for him to connect (beach break) sections from Harry's to PB point, "cross country style"surfing. Every beach break differs but this is as i recall the origin of the shape.growing up in PB watching Skip surf i can tell you they work great for this if your name is Skip Frye. That said they are not an easy board to ride properly, and beach breaks with the typical crowds add to the challenge.Mitsven, Mabile, Miller,Hall and Christenson all know the drill and all make very worthy versions. I have ridden them all along with a few Andreini's. Pick a shaper you want to work with, if you are in southern CA Mitsven is my suggestion. I also suggest you go 10'6 as a starting point to get the full experience.

Nice looking template.
81087 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 12 Surfnfish Oct 15, 2015 2015-10-15T17:15:26-0400 all very helpful. Located on the Oregon coast. Looking for idea more then anything, been reading some shapers perspective, such as Josh Hall. My shaper, Art Coyler, has ordered in a 3 stringer for a 10' board. He used to shape next to Larry Mabile back in the day, know's his shapes well, and can ping Larry for some rocker dims. Like to understand what makes a board work before I order it, and this board will be very different from my usual mid lengths and lb's.
81092 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 13 Fubar Oct 15, 2015 2015-10-15T17:51:43-0400 The two best 11' boards I've ridden are the above-mentioned Andreini and a Christenson. Both have drawn out pintail templates. Also, very flat rocker with a little bit of kick in the nose. Neither pushes much water and they paddle like lightening. The Christension was narrower, maybe by an inch and a bit thinner, more like a "flying letter opener" if you know what I mean. Make sure to go for 11'. You get a little bit earlier takeoff by going for 11' vs. 10'6". It's worth it. Both are good in beach break, which is mostly what there is around here. They are particularly good on bigger days when you getting more of the wave through a much earlier takeoff -- makes beach breaks easier to handle.

81099 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 17 Surfnfish Oct 15, 2015 2015-10-15T19:08:31-0400 Recently spent time with a rapidly emerging shaping friend measuring bottom rocker and contours on his favored boards from Andreini and CC, and we were surprised to realize both used the same bottom profile, done a bit differently. Both shapers installed a center concave from about 2 feet from the nose to just behind the center point. So entry belly, concave, panel V - the concave more of a channel concave with a subtle edge on each side of the concave which then broke/rolled to the rails. Andreini concave wider with more angle break to the rails, CC narrower with less break to the rails.Do those with Andreini gliders seem the same bottom installed? Or on the other gliders mentioned? As mentioned, like to dig into board dims and contours, helps me understand why what works does, and why what doesn't...doesn't.

81134 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 27 jbb Oct 16, 2015 2015-10-16T16:02:44-0400 My 10'3" Andreini rat rod works in small and big. Look at that surf in the background of the photo I posted, last night. That morning we were surfing 1-2 ft point surf. Small and still fun down the line cruising, top to bottom, small cut backs and a couple of steps forward to regain momentum. The Larmo double eagle at 10'6", which Finshack bought from me, was my second favorite board of all time after that Andreini. The Double Eagle was undeniable in 1' surf. The shapes are very different but how much variation will prevent a 10+ foot long board from catching small waves? Currently, I'm riding a 10' Michael Miller egg which is the same template as his version of the eagle, only it has a fuller, rounder tail. I've had similar experience with the M.Miller egg that I have with Larmo eagle and Andreini long vaquero. Ridden them in surf from 1' to O.H. All are very good but the Andreini has always been better, especially in pumping energy. By the way, I have to give credit to Chris T and Big Steve for opening the door for me to the glider experience. Even though I grew up in P.B. and had owned Frye long boards 20 years ago, it wasn't until about 6-7 years ago that I really got hooked. Generally, I ride gliders 70% of the time now. The big break through for me was when I bought my first Larmo 10 ft Big Swallow twinzer. They are all good IMHO. It just depends on the rider. For what it's worth, Smukes' recommendation above is compelling because that Phillips model he refers to is exactly the custom I'm contemplating ordering from Jim.

Definitely go 10'+, I think 10'6-11' is ideal depending on your size/weight. And gliders work fantastic in small waves too, some of my most memorable waves have been barely knee high.

Last thing I'd choose to ride in short lived, punchy, dumpy, beach break would be a long railed, flat rocker glider. By all means, if you want a glider in the quiver get one. They are a blast to ride in the right conditions. But in my experience/opinion they generally aren't an optimal board choice for most beach break set-ups. I'd look at other boards in my quiver before contemplating my 10' 10".

81225 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 69 Big D Oct 18, 2015 2015-10-18T18:02:51-0400 There's always an exception to the rule. Well overhead, lined up Torrey Pines breaking 100 yards off shore is one of them. It probably breaks like that a small handful of times a year in that pic. That's why I stated "generally" and "most". I didn't want to go down the road of "Can't" and "won't work". I'm certainly aware there are. I like a board to be a lot more sharp on the turn, loose and reactive in general beach break with the shifting, racey sections and peaks that beach breaks will provide. There are always "those days", but again I don't find true gliders as an optimal board choice for every day beach break use. If he's looking to stay large with a board for general beach break usage I'd go with other options. That's just me...

81227 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 71 MrChristmas Oct 18, 2015 2015-10-18T18:16:42-0400 Yea but they are fun. True lots of foam to paddle but a board that can ride in most conditions in Southern Calif makes it that much more fun it always isn't optimum is true. The other alternative is to surf the crowded points with tons of people and get only a hand full of waves or surf a ass-kick'n beach break and hone your skills. Here's an 11' X 24" wide Larmo. 81228 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 72 Big D Oct 18, 2015 2015-10-18T18:33:07-0400 No worries Christmas…I hear you. Shark B8…Depends. For the beach break what size surf are we talking, skill set of the rider, size of boards he/she is use to riding, what's already in the quiver, ect. All would play into the factor of a board I'd loan him to try out. The guy is looking for more curve in the outline and more rocker so he's looking for something more responsive off the turn. Understanding the above would help zero in more on a suggestion.

Although beach break is a fairly new thing for me as I lean to Points, I have had a few conversations with Marc Andreini pertaining to surfing beach break, especially when preparing for my move to the land of beach breaks. Marc surfs quite a bit of beach break and you know what he is surfing. I would give him a call or shoot him an email and he will get you in the right direction. Good luck and enjoy the journey.
81233 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 75 finshack Oct 19, 2015 2015-10-18T23:06:10-0400 Beach break is pretty much all I surf over here sadly. I would ride my Larmo in almost everything. It has enough nose rocker to allow steep drops and bottom turns and the speed to make all those crumbly sections. Works in chop, all kinds of nasty wind to nly time it's really out of it's depth is super steep fast close outs, but who wants to surf that anyhow. 81240 1746 what glider for beachbreak? 79 SharkB8 Oct 19, 2015 2015-10-19T05:04:48-0400 Hey big d. The waves around here are usually shoulder and under. Sometimes we get up to 7-8 and then only a few times at the size is it not a washing machine. I'm a average surfer but Iv never been the best in a paddle battle. I like getting in the wave early. I Usually ride a 10-0 Austin soulglide or a 10-0 SWT. I have a hard time making sections. Guy here has a RC skipper that's 11 and he kills it. I picked up a 10-6 of the same and I like the glide aspect. We swapped and his felt like it was just so smooth and flowing. He caught a few with my 10-6 and said he liked it but for a heavier guy the 11 was better suited. He has seen me out and gives me suggestions. I ask for your advice and others here. We have beach beaks. Sometimes it just jacks up and is a close out wall. Many days it is like a wall. Not much shoulder and if it is then it's a race to get there. I have the ability and vehicles to take a few boards so interested in knowing whT others think in these conditions.
