All private weather forecasting companies that provide forecasts for the United States rely on raw data provided by NOAA, and by "rely" I mean "would not be able to forecast the weather without it." If that were to stop it would almost instantly kill all private weather reporting services in the US, not just surf forecasting. The expense and logistics that would be required to build out private versions of that infrastructure is beyond the financial capacity for any of those companies. Even if a company did somehow find the money, it would take several years (potentially decades) to implement and build up comparable capacity... and that assumes there's a viable market dynamic to support such an investment. |
