Santa Maria is now larger than Santa Barbara. SM attracted businesses like machine shops & other industrial buinesses that SB turned their noses up at preferring everything be a tourist attraction. SB is wonderfu place with it's "American Riviera" and southern exposure, but it is economically less diverse and more expensive. You can still buy a nice home in SM for one half to a third of what you would pay in SB. Santa Maria appears to be a well planned community with wide streets, ample parking everywhere, and conveniently located shopping centers and auto dealers. A variety of beaches are within close proximity as well as schools, colleges and medical facilities. They basically have everything SB has but cheaper, with more space around it and less attitude.
