18004 228 Post Malibu/SanO Notes 72 mro87 Oct 2, 2008 2008-10-02T04:11:34-0400 I'm finally back in PR after a great time in Cali. It was good to see old friends and meet a couple of new ones. A few notes: Al's soup this year was spectacular. Nothing new here as it has been spectacular for the last couple of years. Tentoesed can hang ten, and... drink a Puertorican under the table, no small feat. Logdonkey a close second. Easygoing award of the weekend... lots of worthy candidates, but Vegaluca takes it home. Happy he was surfing, happy he was drinking, happy when he was hurt... Boardfest. I tried a lot of boards. Have to say that there were two highlights: 10 foot Bing Trimulux, which Miles had to pry from my hands when he left, and a Jacobs that I took from Margaret. Tried and enjoyed a couple of Coops, the Austin and a couple other boards. Rode a beautifull Coop Chris Vail that Jason brought. It was beautifull enough to kill for. BTW, for the record, no bias in my review of the Bing/Jacobs, they just worked great for me in the conditions we had (small). Caught waves easily and early, trimmed great, stable croos stepping and stable on the nose= nice long rides. Caught the smallest wave I have ever caught in Malibu on the Jacobs. Probably ankle high and still was able to cross step to the nose and do a five. No small feat as I am not that good a noserider. Board that did not ride that really wanted to (for the second year in a row)- Fade to Black. Tried the longboard ribs, could not finish them even after having 4 surf sessions in a day. This brings me to food: Pedro's Tacos, Pipe's breakfast burritos, Rib Trader's ribs, Surfing Donuts donuts. Enough said. Surf Celebrities: Saw Skip Fry, Allan Sarlo (spelling?), Carlos and Raul surfed with Pickle Warren, met and talked to Terry Martin in his shaping bay, Matt Calvani, Jim Phillips, Zeph, Lonedog, etc.., etc... Adam (Bing) is going to be a surf celebrity. Saw him surfing on Saturday and he was mind blowing. Breaks- Malibu on Friday was good and got to be great at least for me. Not too crowded, just you and your 357 closest friends. Got a great wave but did not really figure out the break. Sano on the weekend- Dogpatch was small, Old Man's a bit bigger. Got tons of fun waves. Have to say that Adam was the best surfer I saw. Sunday afternoon went to Doheny with Miles, Raul and Carlos. Best session of the weekend. Waist to shoulder high waves, perfecly lined up, few people, big Trimulux, beautiful day with great sunset. Perfection. Also visited Cardiff and the breaks in that area on Tuesday and surfed Doheny again really good, if smaller, and on Tuesday surfed Church and Middles in Trestles and Malibu. Malibu part II- ettiquette and courtesy does not work there. Tried it, got no waves, was dropped, snaked, cut, etc... Got tired of it and started to snake, drop and basically do the same to the people that were doing it to me, bingo, started catching waves, and people started to let me catch waves by myself (sometimes). Finally got Malibu- ride a high line, trim, pump, noseride. Rinse and repeat. Vibe- the best thing about Sano weekend is not the surf, is the people and the vibe. Both from the forum members and from others. Met friendly people everywhere, in Malibu, Trestles, Sano, the restaurants, etc... Standouts are the guys who bbq'ed chiquen for us on Sunday afternoon in Sano, Matt and Margaret who went above and beyond the required to take care of a couple of lost puerto ricans, who unmercifully abused their hospitality. Miles. Once again, thanks for the Texas Hilton, pads, boards, etc... Beer- not that any was drunk in Sano, but if in theory, any had been drunk, by far the best one would have been the Sirius. Thanks Ben. Well, got to work, I know I left a lot out but will try to posted later with some pics.
