Wrestled DIII in college (dog years from II, light years from I; still, won only two more matches than lost, textbook mediocrity, though wouldn't have gone to college otherwise), played baseball until 22, fast-pitch softball (the bomb, once) until 30, slo-pitch until 50. Bill! How the f*ck you been?\"), sun rising, steaming off scattered clouds until it was a Tensor lamp, staggered off the beach at 12:30, seven-plus hours of bliss, the only words in the thought bubble above my head being those of gratitude and, without sounding maudlin, a foreshadowing of regret when I can't do this anymore.\n \n\n\nClick to expand...\n\n\n\n\nHave no fear Paul, when you cant make the drive anymore....I will pick you up on my way to Assateague Island!!!! I honestly don't think I'd be surfing if I had a three hour drive. I don't live by the sea but my drive is about 7min early morning, 15min busy traffic to the closet break. Kids these days!\n\n\n\nThere was a video recently about Gerry Lopez living hours from the coast. Waking up far before the break of day to make the long venture from the mountains to the coast and how he appreciated the whole experiance. Being from the east coast, I and many others feel that a lust and longing for waves developes because of a common lack of swell. It's simple really, you want what you can't have. And east coasters want it bad! 3 hours drive to catch waves... Easy. Guys from NJ would drive to Killington(6hours) to get a good day of snowboarding in then drive home that night... Madness! I once caught a dawn patrol in OCNJ then high tailed it to the Ponconos to shred the gnar in the afternoon for a true surf-N-turf delight. For some reason that doesn't sound so appealing to me anymore:?. Maybe it also has something to do with the way people back east live, with their no B.S. work ethics, I wonder how that translates to passion for surf or other things for that matter. In places where waves aren't so illusive, people get surfed out... Come Feb or March, after a long run of swell on the west coast, you can find empty lineups which would have been teaming with surfers just weeks prior. Either way it's all good!!!
